New year, new(ish) intro post

Hey everyone, I am Vildravn and I've been in the #gamedev industry for over 10 years now. I am a build engineer by profession - it's like playing Factorio but in real life!

On the side, I dabble in variety of coding and try to make my own games or help other devs.

What helped me a little bit was getting on a starter pack with one of the twitter exodus waves last year. I've had more conversations and overall a better time here than I've ever had on twitter... then there's Mastodon which is kinda a mess...

Obsidian uses local files, so all your standard terminal commands work for editing/moving/searching/etc

Obsidian CLI adds everything else:

- interacting with the UI
- internal functions e.g. base queries, orphans, etc
- devtools, console, screenshots, eval, etc

discord screenshot showing a post from Alice, half an hour ago: I just saw a related post on bsky and was reminded that probably not everyone is aware of this, so here we go: General PSA for video game enjoyers: leave reviews on Steam Steam reviews (both the overall number as well as the review ratio) have an immense impact on a game's visibility if you're the 10th or 50th or 100th person to leave a review on a game, you can genuinely change that game's trajectory towards failure/success you don't need to write a whole essay, just a sentence or two and deciding on a ๐Ÿ‘ / ๐Ÿ‘Ž is enough to make a meaningful difference if a game has a Free Demo and the Demo has a separate page where you can leave reviews for the Demo, the same applies The overall number of reviews defines which label the game gets. For example, I believe >50 reviews AND 80% positive reviews are needed for Very Positive, while >500 reviews and 95% positive gets you Overwhelmingly Positive When a new game comes out, you're doing the developer a gigantic favor if you leave a preliminary positive review after the first 10min of playing, even if you might revisit it later to edit your review once you've played more a game needs at least 10 reviews to even get a "Positive" label - for a newly released game, it makes a huge difference if they achieve this within the first few hours of launching or not, because it determines whether the Steam algorithm will show the game to more people early visibility and moderate commercial success can determine whether a game can even afford to invest in further updates and improvements. If you're generous with your reviews in the first few days of a release, you increase the game's overall chances of becoming a better product in time. In short: Leave reviews quickly, often and generously if you want to help developers succeed and get visibility. You can still switch your ๐Ÿ‘ to a ๐Ÿ‘Ž later if you feel like feedback is being ignored or improvements aren't being made.
