Farmers are being betrayed. CropLife Europe, the von der Leyen Commission, the EPP and the far right are pushing the EU-MERCOSUR deal — devastating for farmers and the environment, while Bayer & BASF profit. Protests are being hijacked to weaken EU pesticide and health rules.

The report asks whether we could manage fire risk effectively through using less flammable materials + improving fire safety awareness + prevention measures, without filling our homes + furniture with potentially harmful chemicals:

Because chemical flame retardants slow down burning, the burning process is less complete, releasing thicker smoke. The presence of CFRs correlates with higher levels of toxic hydrogen cyanide and carbon monoxide in fire smoke, finds the report.

Research indicates those countries have had just as much success reducing fire risk by increasing use of smoke alarms, changing smoking habits, educating people about fire safety.

The UK uses very high levels of chemical flame retardants compared with other countries, many of whom have reduced fire risk as much as the UK has without using such high levels of chemical flame retardants.

It raises that less flammable materials, such as wool or hempcrete, are available. These wouldn't need to be so heavily treated with chemical flame retardants as research indicates they have a natural resistance to fire.

CHEM Trust has published a new blog setting out why the recent updates to the EU’s group #PFAS restriction proposal, including options for increased exemptions and transition times, highlight systemic weaknesses in REACH.
