As part of my PhD research, I'm planning on setting off on the most ambitious adventure I've ever done - cycling a cross-section of the country to speak with farmers about their visions of the future.

Highlights For marginalised street users mode separation is the key to human-scale movement. Streets conducive to walking and cycling have functional, safe and accessible design. Professionals must approach street design, regulation and user behaviour holistically. Combinations of influencing factors persuade people to either use or avoid a street. There are no easy fixes to the public realm that will work for all non-drivers.

From a space for cars to a place for people — one of my favourite past client cities, Groningen Netherlands. Another powerful before-&-after transformation 1960s vs 2021.

In recent years one of the city’s biggest challenges has been where to park all the bikes.

Seriously.

I’m over 1000 miles into my #PhDbyBike and have visited 19 farms across 7 counties, so far!

I’m still looking to speak with women involved in large-scale horticulture and dairy, as well as pig and poultry farming! If you know anyone who might be interested, please do share the project with them!

Black and white cartoon illustrating the difference between a bike used for sport, and one used for transport. Sport bike is fairly fast, posture tending towards horizontal, clothing is various items of kit. Transport bike is not quite so fast, posture often quite vertical, and you can wear your normal clothes. Both are fun and healthy.
