Today is St Clement's Day, the patron saint of blacksmiths and metal workers.

At Finch Foundry in Devon, blacksmiths will gather to show their skills and complete in the annual snail race. Not what you might immediately think of, the race is to create an iron snail sculpture!

One of the many many random things I know about as a result of my Antiques Road Trip addiction...
yes yes we all know about the Edmund Fitzgerald, rest her soul, but did you know about the ship laden with explosives that sank in the mouth of the Thames in 1944 and could explode at any minute and which attempts to disarm keep failing

PSA: this is great. The segments towards the end of the first episode on adders and nightingales are wonderful(but also, when you hear about the declines in their populations, chokingly sad) www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

These are milu, also known as Pere David's deer. Once wiped out in the wild, they now roam across the Chinese landscape in great herds. From just 39 animals reintroduced from British zoos in 1986, their numbers have now topped 14,000. Wow.

Have camped in Buxton *summer* weather, every morning in the shower queue there would be people chatting about when they could reasonably leave without ruining their children's holiday completely. Also quite distressingly it was so windy a squirrel's nest blew out of a tree as we walked in the park
Buxton is the Blackpool of spa towns. Grand Victorian buildings, a decaying high street, extremely poor transport connections and prone to extreme weather in winter.
