To carry 50,000 people per hour in each direction, a city needs a 175m wide road for cars.

Even if those cars are electric.

And then there’s all the parking.

OR a city can move A LOT MORE people in a lot less space, with A LOT LESS public money and pollution.

To save runaways from slavery who were trying to make lives in the North “illegally,” local Vigilance Committees formed. They kept watch for slave catchers, secreted away those in danger, and posted placards that outed slave catchers, sometimes hounding them till they left town.
A group in San Diego is patrolling neighborhoods to identify potential ICE presence. They keep watch for vehicles that may belong to federal agencies, and use livestreams, radios, and social media to keep communities informed.

Solar Panel Waste is Tiny—Coal & Gas Emit Hundreds Of Times Mass Per MWh - CleanTechnica
Stop exaggerating solar panel waste. Coal and gas produce massive emissions and health hazards per MWh, vastly outweighing solar’s minimal waste.

This is a concise overview of how American research universities became so heavily reliant on federal government funding and how that relationship has been mutually beneficial.

A great book on this subject focused on Oceanography is @naomioreskes.bsky.social's Science on a Mission.
How Universities Became So Dependent on the Federal Government (Gift Article)
For decades, universities got billions in federal dollars for research. The relationship was mutually beneficial, until President Trump decided it wasn’t.

Remember when Trump's 2018 trade war killed US soy exports to China? What was supposed to be "easy to win" turned into Brazil permanently stealing our #1 agricultural market. Now they supply over 70% of China's soy. That's not a negotiation, that's surrender.

In first term, when Trump fucked with soy exports to China. They switched to Brazil. And US permanently lost those markets.

Trump: "I spoke to a lot of leaders -- European, Asian, from all over the world. They are dying to make a deal, but I said 'we're not gonna have deficits with your country' ... to me a deficit is a loss. We're gonna have surpluses or at worst we're gonna be breaking even."

Tonight we learned that it was indeed Andry, the gay man sent to El Salvador because of his “mom” and “dad” tattoos, who an American journalist saw sobbing as guards slapped him repeatedly and shaved his head.

He is an innocent. And Trump sent him to a torture prison.

Bring them back!

When Trump attacked Canada, millions turned to #CBC — because we knew we could trust it.

Now Poilievre wants to axe it. Not reform it. Not improve it. Destroy it.

In normal times, that would be reckless.
In these times, it feels like treason.

Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.

ALL ROAD USERS.

And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them.

Separated Bike Lanes Means Safer Streets, Study Says — Streetsblog USA
Cities that build protected lanes for cyclists end up with safer roads for people on bikes and people in cars and on foot, a new study of 12 large metropolises revealed Wednesday.

I think this is one of my favourite colourful climate chart type things, because it depicts two things at once:

- Things are going to get worse, no matter what

- The degree to which they get worse depends on decisions made today

Experts weigh in on claim that electric cars have a mining problem: 'It always makes me laugh.' The mineral use for electric cars is actually far lower than gasoline and diesel's when accounting for oil needed for fuel-burning cars.

Have we permanently breached the 1.5C "so called limit", the threshold after which things get MUCH worse and MUCH faster?
Not necessarily

But this is how it starts

When it happens, this is what it will look like in the first year
This is no joke: 2024 was the warmest year in multi-dataset record of global temperature since 1850.

Each month Jan-June was warmer than the corresponding month in any previous year. Aug equalled the record warmth of Aug 2023 and July-Dec were each the 2nd warmest for the time of year, after 2023.
The Global Climate Highlights 2024 report is now online.
