Guess I'm just "dicking around" because all these other platforms are inaccessible to me (deafblind, hello). Y'all know where to find me, though. ✌️
i have said this before but if you are actually interested in influencing people beyond a narrow circle of too-online journalists you will be making direct to camera videos on tiktok, instagram and youtube. if you primarily post on text-based social media then you're just dicking around.

I really don't like complaining, but does anyone else feel like the burden of universities having reduced budgets is slowly being placed on them? For me, it's now no TA support, responsible for compiling my own budget reports, frozen university funds (going on 2 years), etc. ?

Well this sucks.
Tattoo ink can accumulate in the lymph nodes, where it can induce a prominent and long-term inflammatory response, according to a study in mice. Tattoo ink at injection sites can also modulate immune responses to vaccines in mice. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/meuU50XCZjN

Fresh off their R&R HOF induction, all I can think of is the White Stripes:

"I'm gonna fight 'em off, a seven tentacle arm-y couldn't hold me back"

Sorry not sorry
Fresh from the deep—a rarely seen giant in Monterey Bay. 🤩

Last month, MBARI Senior Scientist Steven Haddock and the Biodiversity & Biooptics Team spotted a seven-arm octopus (Haliphron atlanticus) holding a crimson helmet jelly (Periphylla periphylla). Learn more: www.mbari.org/animal/seven...

My most-used bluesky words in 2025 were: 1. "congrats" (25×) 2. "research" (17×) 3. "paper" (15×) 4. "soil" (13×) 5. "those" (13×)

Reranking partisan animosity in algorithmic social media feeds alters affective polarization
Today, social media platforms hold the sole power to study the effects of feed-ranking algorithms. We developed a platform-independent method that reranks participants’ feeds in real time and used thi...

It's been 8 years for us, but I can confirm moving still sucks.

Even though it's a local move (~1 mile), we still have to pack everything and relocate it!

Happy International Mens Day!

If you are a teen, find a role model that exemplifies the honorable virtues of masculinity and strive toward compassion.

If you are an adult, strive to be a pillar of your community...but also go get a colonoscopy and check your prostate please.

I feel this. A big part of my professional growth over the last few years has been the realization that I will not live to carry out the vast majority of my ideas. As a result, I'm much more open with sharing them than ever before.
Science is like this too 🧪
I am not aware of a single author who has a shortage of book ideas. Words, yes. Ways to make the ideas become a book, yes. But I've never met an author who doesn't have ideas just raining down all the damn time.

Starting this week, I set aside one hour each week to meet ECRs outside my group who want to discuss career development, mentorship, or any non-technical professional questions.

Here is a blog that explains my motivation for this and how to schedule a meeting:
