This was the second-biggest wtf moment of the presser (after announcing "we will run the country")
Trump just basically threw the Venezuelan opposition — the ones who evidence shows won the 2023 election — to the side.

Welcome back, 19th century wars of American expansion 🫠
“It’s our property, we built it… we built Venezuela and the socialist regime stole it from us through force,” Trump said, claiming the nationalization of the oil industry and US companies being forced out constituted the “largest theft to our country… they [drove us] out of our own hemisphere.”

Trump just announced “we are going to run the country” until they can guarantee a just transition because they “can’t run the risk of someone else taking over” Venezuela.

“We are going to run it, essentially.”

The US alleges Maduro and other officials participated in a “narco-terrorism conspiracy” involving Venezuela’s Cartel de los Soles and Colombia’s FARC—a far-left guerrilla—dating from at least around 1999 through about 2020 incl. negotiating cocaine shipments and directing support such as weapons.

Venezuelan opposition figure and actual Nobel Peace Prize winner (and Trump policy supporter) Maria Corina Machado said that “what had to happen is happening” and that Venezuelans should be ready to set in motion “what will be communicated to [them] via official channels.”

Meanwhile Balkan countries like Kosovo and Albania appear to have decided this was the right moment to back the current US administration and its approach to Venezuela

Prediction markets really expose some of the most disgusting human impulses in our push to monetize every aspect of daily life 🤯
This person went on a buying spree over the past 24 hours. Fresh wallet. Only existed since Dec 27th and has only bet on Venezuela-related markets.

BBC World Service talking about Maduro's "apparent defenestration"?
Not sure that's quite right, but if you're going to throw someone out of a window, Manhattan's the place to do it

Venezuela’s had about 6-8 coups and failed coups, depending on who’s counting — sadly not unusual for South America. What’s new is seeing a decapitation event publicly framed as US-led in real time and rolled out almost entirely on social media.

Welcome to coups in the digital era
We’re doing “Mission Accomplished” again, declaring that forced removal of a foreign leader means problem solved?

Except with Venezuela, assuming regime change will work on its own, without an occupation/stabilization force or plan for a new government?

Cilia Flores gets a lot less international attention than Nicolas Maduro, but she’s been a high-profile Chavista insider for years. Flores was on Hugo Chavez’s defense team and helped secure his release from prison/clemency in 1994 (without trial) after the failed 1992 coup attempt.

The rules-based international order was always a euphemism for what the US government was prepared to back with force, but kidnapping a foreign leader does suggest that DJT needs to watch much less television. This is the scheme of a Batman villain.

Democrats — who, unlike much of the rest of the world, have some capacity to curtail the administration — will likely respond by offering still more restraint and ever more milquetoast candidates
Kidnapping the leader of a foreign state without any declaration of war and announcing it via social media is full-on rogue state stuff. From the world’s number one superpower.

To sum up, a US president is going to war without congressional authorization against a sovereign nation that has not attacked or threatened it, and is doing so like a thief in the night, with no explanation for the American people or the world. It is all so unimaginable that it strains credulity.

I’m happy to stand corrected — HAL, the hyper-aware AI software managing an advanced space invasion in a movie that came out in 1968 — is in fact MORE advanced than ChatGPT, Grok, Claude, etc. and is a warning for a future when machine-generated decision-making will actively decide to kill humans.
