Wild, indeed. Denmark didn't feel like joining its EU partner Spain in condemning the Venezuela op, though?
It's wild that the PM of a NATO member feels compelled to put out a statement like this vis-à-vis the US government.

Is that any way for a fellow World Cup host to talk about a FIFA Peace Prize holder?

Macron, Le Pen, Melenchon (or an LFI statement pushed on his handle).

BBC World Service talking about Maduro's "apparent defenestration"?
Not sure that's quite right, but if you're going to throw someone out of a window, Manhattan's the place to do it

Europe needs its own social media for afternoons like this.
Every US account is going to be "Wait, what?" for the next hour or so

Maduro is going to have to buy a lot of crypto to get a pardon after all this

I've only seen one post on here so far asserting that Trump did a hugely consequential thing to distract from this other thing that the poster thinks we should all still be outraged about.

We're getting better at this

OK, Wales probably exists. But whales? Seems improbable on the face of it
First superb conspiracy theory of 2026 overheard in the street! I love this. I feel it sets the tone for a superb year:

“Wales is fake.”

Did you know… that in many European countries… they show a long forgotten classic black and white British sketch on New Year’s Eve? YES IT IS THE ONLY THING WE KNOW ABOUT MANY EUROPEAN COUNTRIES.

I live in France where we've hated everyone for years, but I follow UK politics at a slight distance and thought I was aware of our leaders' many shortcomings. Then, when I'm visiting home in an historically Labour area, I'm always struck by the sheer depth of Starmer hatred
Glad the FT is asking the question. Even if I’m not convinced they found a compelling answer.
I get that Starmer & Reeves are unpopular, I really don’t understand the extent of the dislike.

Allies concede the prime minister and chancellor have made mistakes yet the level of disdain towards them is still striking

Le groupe lié à la famille Mulliez a choisi de rester dans le pays malgré la guerre avec l’Ukraine. Mais le Covid puis le conflit ont eu des conséquences. #Rediff

Quite. A proper country would have given the brothers their gongs when Barry was still alive and they could have gone up the steps of the palace together, preferably carrying a ladder

New Zealand has cashed in its 100% passport rating to get the whole country one big one, up anchor and set off for a tropical holiday
This map shows the percentage of the population with a valid passport across the world. International travel is a wonderful privilege.

Love my employer, and my excellent colleagues did great work this year as every year, but: No thank you, I will not be looking back on it all, not right now
🔴 🎥 Looking back on 2025: Donald Trump's return to the White House, a fragile ceasefire in Gaza, war in Ukraine and Sudan, a new pope and Gen Z protests around the world.
