A few years ago, I wrote a piece explaining that vigilantism is a crucial part of law-and-order politics. Now seems like a good time to repost: www.cnn.com/2021/02/05/o...
Opinion: What Kyle Rittenhouse’s fate reveals about ‘law and order’ | CNN
Nicole Hemmer situates Kyle Rittenhouse’s bond controversy as part of the cultural and political history of using “law and order” arguments as a pretext for White vigilantism (which she points out has...

"Throughout this extraordinarily painful two year case, I’ve many times believed that I’d be better off dead than endure more his litigation abuse...I desperately need to live my life. That’s the choice I am making today."

So much love to Charlotte.

Andrew Cuomo is a monster. My statement below.

listen, the president losing his first choice pick to be secretary of defense less than a month after announcing him is an unambiguous defeat, just like losing his first choice pick to be AG was
Just can’t accept the idea that shooting this Hegseth freak out of a canon was a genius scheme to install Ron DeSantis. Obviously DeSantis is a certin and a weirdo. But much as was the case with Rubio, even a lot of Democrats wld likely breath a sigh of relief seeing DeSantis get the job …

Both Texas and Georgia are destroying evidence of all maternal mortality, blocking proof that women are dying from abortion bans.

This story has a lot more going on than you think. Especially since Republicans are lying about the public cases.

Republicans don't care if women die from abortion bans — but they don't want you to know about it

my going explanation for this is that it is sociological. pundits overwhelmingly live in culturally liberal urban areas where they are constantly exposed to a certain progressive cultural milieu in extremely high concentrations. they feel deep resentment and this is projected onto reactionaries!
Is there a psychoanalytic read for the impetus, seemingly ubiquitous among the US pundit class, to automatically exonerate those on the right from any responsibility for their decisions, viewing them as somehow perpetually besieged and behaving in reaction to a morally oppressive left?

I often show my students this visualization of how atmospheric CO₂ travels around the globe. Our attitude toward burning fossil fuels would change significantly if we could actually see CO₂.

one of my iron clad beliefs is that there are very few actual “schemes” in the world. instead, there are just a lot of stupid, venal people and quite a few of them hold positions of real power and authority
"Corporate leadership is as stupid as everyone else and freaked out about viral shoplifting videos" isn't as exciting as "the pharmacies are doing fascist performance art so they can uh murder all poor people" but sometimes things really are just stupid

And where reputable journalists and thinkers go, so do elected officials.

I’ve been getting asked lately about a more serious + systemic migration to Bluesky among electeds.

Idk the answer but it highlights how much of a breaking point misinfo & throttling has become for Twitter(& other platforms)
