Hello, new friends! 👋

I'm Ben. I'm a software/product guy and one of the world's top Notion experts. I make software and currently run the NotionMastery.com program.

Connect with me if you're interested in my favorite topics: Systems, Complexity, Permaculture.

Here are my favorite books:
@adamneely.bsky.social's latest on AI music is an outstanding follow-up to his "Ethics of Fake Guitar" piece (in which genre sort of "encodes" ethics). Exploring the technocapitalist value capture of AI is missing from most discourse, and it's valuable to apply that lens to all creative genre.

Over the next couple months @mariepoulin.com and I are taking a local course called "Plan Like A Farmer". First session this weekend on purpose and vision, starting to get into planning a bit. So much complexity! We have a good working garden, but want it to be even more sustaining and connective.

Ever have one of those bands where you've listened to one album a bunch of times, but literally have never heard another of their albums before? Weird. Anyway, changing that this morning. Also, this is by far one of the best LPs of the 90s:

There's a tactility lost in rounding off the edges for machine use. The sharp bits, rough surfaces, oddities, uncomfortable liminality, grief, hardness; things that ground us. I continue to be encouraged that an embodied, humanistic resurgence will arise in the pendulum swing. Enjoying the friction.
Saw a post today that advised writers to stop writing as if a human will read it and start writing for an LLM that will be summarising.

As someone who really enjoyed trying to develop a peculiar but readable authorial voice, I find this incredibly depressing.

I would argue that Anthropic is the end-result of all the centralization. The question to me is how single users build anything without Anthropic being at the top of the stack as the prime value extractor.
I don't want us to replicate what we have today. I want us to replace it. We don't need to build centralized services that scale to billions of users. We need to build billions of services that scale to a single user.
What if this wave of AI tools enables us to regain control over our data and replicate the majority of SaaS services we pay for today. We've already solved the distribution problem and the open source community has the ability democratize the tech stack.

That would be one hell of a power shift.

I feel like introspection is a pretty critical facet of of these agentic tools. Wonder how tool-finding is impacted when even the most "tell me about yourself" query is incorrect.

widdled down song sketches from ~200 to ~40 active projects. I think there's an album in here somewhere. I haven't released a song since september and I've been feeling sad about that, but I haven't not been creative, clearly. clean-up work can be creativity inducing!

Told a friend I'm trying (failing) to be on Slack less and they said "I can't do that during the week". I said, "I'm fighting that *can't*. I can do whatever I want!", and they said, "after a second of thought, yeah, my team could text me."

You can microdose unmediating your attention. It adds up.

profoundly jealous of someone getting to listen to entroducing for the the first time, my goddess. while we're here, @mikevardy.bsky.social, I need to make sure you are also aware of The Avalanches LP, "Since I Left You".

I love when my students send me the physical artifacts they capture for themselves when taking my trainings. This one on workspace architecture and Notion permissions. Your messy notes bring me great joy.

Grief is one of the most powerful things you can experience; a rich, clarifying, identity emboldening agent of transmutation. To truly throw yourself into it is to be profoundly changed. We can even grieve the fact that our culture has robbed us of its expression. Such stagnation in resisting.
AI “deadbots” aim to replace the dead—and raise plenty of ethical issues, Charley Burlock argues. “Perhaps the biggest question is how such a product might shift our experience of personal grief and collective memory.”

Finally installed Serum2. Had no idea it was a free upgrade for Serum customers! UI is super nice, brings it closer to the slick design of Pigments. Can't wait to mess around with this more. #Playbleton #MusicProdSky

Notion users often want to know how to avoid over-organizing. The temptation is strong in Notion because you can tinker with everything. My advice? Quit Notion and avoid trying to manage the artifacts of your workflow and focus on the workflow itself. Limit planning + conduct a time inventory.

Something I hinged on to get to this what I describe: the Marxian fetishisation of artefacts is so complete in the case of AI that not only do we somehow conclude machines think, but we accept for them to think, speak, draw instead of us, while also thinking these are (expressions of) our thoughts.

I think being exposed to the internet is basically going to guarantee psychosis within the year. When should we get out? Serious question: what are you doing to develop machine-free psychic defences we'll need in this infohazardous wasteland?
