Just got this in the post: Poradnik bezpieczeństwa (Safety Guide). It’s a govt-issued public information brochure on how to prepare for & respond to emergencies (e.g. natural disasters, major accidents, security incidents). Unusually for PL, it’s written in accessible language. See ALT text for info

On the left page, a simple line drawing of a hallway or room shows a window taped in a cross pattern, a radiator, a door sealed at the bottom with fabric, shelves stocked with supplies, and an emergency backpack placed by the exit. Checklists explain preparing materials to seal windows and doors, clearing corridors and stairwells, and preparing for interruptions to water, electricity, gas, telephone and internet supplies, with a note to maintain household reserves for at least three days. On the right page, an illustrated kitchen scene shows a parent and child, a fire extinguisher, smoke and carbon-monoxide detector, gas and water shut-off points, ventilation, and a first-aid kit. The accompanying text advises marking gas, electricity and water shut-offs, installing and maintaining smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors, equipping the home with a fire extinguisher and fire blanket, carrying out regular inspections of installations, and identifying the safest place in the home, away from windows and near load-bearing walls. My house is woefully underprepared! A double page spread from the same Polish safety booklet covering emergency response. The left page is titled “Atak z powietrza” (Air attack). It contains text instructions on what to do when an alarm sounds, including following evacuation routes to shelter, taking an emergency backpack, avoiding lifts, using stairs, and choosing shelters without windows and with thick walls and ceilings. An illustration shows a person lying flat on the ground in a shallow depression, covering their head, while debris falls nearby, representing behaviour during an explosion. Additional points advise not to leave the shelter prematurely, to avoid overloading phone networks by sending text messages, and to help others if possible. The right page is titled “Zagrożenia chemiczne, biologiczne, radiacyjne i nuklearne” (Chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats). It lists step-by-step actions after a warning, such as alerting others, sealing buildings, switching off ventilation, leaving contaminated areas, removing contaminated clothing, washing skin and hair, isolating potentially contaminated items in sealed bags, and avoiding contaminated food. It says that in the case of radioactive contamination, people should prepare to stay inside a sealed building for several days, and that radiation levels decrease over time. At the bottom are four hazard symbols labelled chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear. Reminds me of the UK govt’s information in the early 1980s. Scared me to death. Another double page spread from the Polish public information leaflet titled “Zagrożenia terrorystyczne” (Terrorist threats) on the left and “Zagrożenia cyfrowe” (Digital threats) on the right. The left page gives emergency advice: run away from an attack, warn others, call services, get away from crowds, hide behind solid barriers, lock and barricade doors, silence your phone, and fight back with whatever you have to hand if escape is impossible. A bold subheading says “Nie bądź bierny!” (Don’t be passive!) followed by warnings: call only if necessary, don’t block phone networks or give away people’s hiding places, don’t share photos or videos from the scene, and don’t spread panic by sharing unverified information. The right page, “Dezinformacja” explains disinformation and urges you to check information with several trusted sources, not share fake news, and not publish locations or activities of the Polish army or allies. The bottom text recommends using reliable public sources such as Polish Radio, state TV, government websites and services (I can see that going down well with my fellow citizens!). Two simple line-drawn women, one holding a smartphone, appear at the bottom of the page.

One of the lovely Limes that line the path to the Summer Theatre in Szczecin. At the weekends it’s a very popular spot for family walks but when I go it’s usually pretty quiet. I love the mosses and lichens on the trunk - they’re about the only colour we have in winter! #ThickTrunkTuesday
A single mature Lime tree stands in the center of a wide pedestrian path in Kasprowicz Park in Szczecin, Poland. The tree has a thick, straight trunk with rough, vertically ridged bark and patches of green moss near the base. Several rounded swellings are visible low on the trunk where branches once grew. From about head height upward, many bare branches spread out evenly in all directions, creating a broad crown without leaves. The path is made of light-colored compacted gravel, bordered by a narrow line of paving stones, and runs straight ahead into the distance. Similar leafless trees line both sides of the path, and low grass and leaf-covered ground extend beyond them. The sky above is partly cloudy with large white clouds and areas of blue, and the light suggests a clear, cool day in winter.

Despite being the dullest day ever, crowds have come to see a new ferry, the Jantar Unity, which is due to start operating between Świnoujście & Trelleborg (Sweden). The ‚Polsca’ logo refers to Poland & Scandinavia but is read as Polska, which is what we call Poland 🇵🇱😸 #Szczecin Info in ALT text
The Jantar Unity is a new, modern Ro-Pax ferry (for passengers and vehicles) built for the Polish operator Unity Line. It’s one of the most advanced ferries currently on the Baltic Sea, roughly 200 m long with capacity for around 400 passengers and about 270 trucks. Its design emphasises environmental performance and comfort, and it’s intended to operate on the Świnoujście–Trelleborg (Sweden) route. This image shows a wide view of the ferry moored at the Wały Chrobrego in Szczecin. The large white-and-blue vessel dominates the right side of the frame, with pedestrians gathered along the embankment. Historic stone terraces, parked cars and winter-bare trees line the riverbank under an overcast sky. The Jantar Unity was built in Poland at the Gdańsk Remontowa Shipyard (Gdańska Stocznia Remontowa), which is part of Remontowa Holding and one of the country’s major commercial shipbuilding facilities. It was constructed there under contract for Unity Line as part of a new series of modern Ro-Pax ferries designed for Baltic service. It wasn’t built in Szczecin because after the collapse and restructuring of the Stocznia Szczecińska in the 2000s, Szczecin lost serial new-build capability for large commercial ships. Was supposed to go to Gdańsk this weekend but the weather’s looking decidedly like we’d end up stuck in a snowdrift so here are some pictures of last year’s trip at the same time 😺 Well worth the visit! When I first went about 25 years ago the buildings in the 3rd picture were completely absent.

6 January 1878 | Jewish man, Hanen Angel, was born in Thessaloniki (then Ottoman Empire, today Greece). He emigrated to France.

He was deported to #Auschwitz from #Drancy on 20 January 1944. He was murdered in a gas chamber after the arrival selection.
