...I am Fortune's fool. Author of The Jesuit Letter, Black Dog and Thieves' Castle. Marketer, writer, cat wrangler, walker of bear-dogs.
If you haven’t seen PM Mark Carney’s Davos speech in full, you should watch it.

In 17 min., he essentially burned down the current international order & turned a generation of foreign policy on its head.

Smart. Realistic. Practical.

In a speech to the World Economic Forum, Mark Carney says middle powers such as Canada must accept that the rules-based international order is effectively dead, and great power rivalry with is here to stay. Key excerpt:

Carney: "American hegemony in particular helped provide public goods, a stable financial system... this bargain no longer works. Let me be direct. We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition... recently, great powers have begun using economic integration as a weapon. Tariffs as leverage ... "

A small and exotic Buddha found far from home in #VikingAge buildings on the Swedish lake island of Helgö.

Probably made in the Swat Valley, the Buddha travelled some 5,000 km from its place of origin, encapsulating the idea of long-distance trade during the Viking Age.

Someone asked me if I had a "soundtrack" or music in mind in my books.

I don't typically, but this track from Django Unchained fit the situation/mode of my main character pretty damn solidly, and listening to it, weirdly helped me find that character's experience.

Current read:

Rise and Kill First by Ronen Bergman - an eye-opening look at Israel's use of targeted assassination, Mossad, and the last 70 years of the Middle East violence.

My reaction: Yikes. Fascinating. Horrifying. Helluva book.

Conrad was the name of a raccoon that died on the corner of Yonge and Church in the summer of 2015. And though Conrad was just a raccoon, he was human enough to inspire compassion and warmth in the hearts of Torontonians. This is a monument in his honour that moves around the city.
