Oil & gas pollution is everywhere but it's invisible like germs. I make it visible. It is causing the climate crisis. I show their dirty secrets and expose their fraud and lies. They sue me to shut me up but I win. 5th gen Texan, hate football.
Pinned
One reason there is a climate crisis is because oil and gas pollution is invisible. If you could see it with your bare eyes, spewing out from everywhere, you would stop it.

At @oilfieldwitness.bsky.social we make the invisible visible.

When I wrote a book about oil train regulations I got to see how regulations were made.

So none of the info in this document about the EU methane regulations surprises me but if the oil and gas companies are in on closed door meetings with regulators, it's unlikely we get real regs.
The EU recently announced new details on their approach to figuring out how to import US LNG that complies with their regulatory limits for methane emissions. Our team spent the week putting together this overview. We have little confidence the proposed solutions will deliver the promised results.

New Mexico has "banned" routine flaring. Sounds great, right?

How come we can see the flaring from space then?

They produce oil in California, Colorado, Wyoming, etc. Don't see any flaring there do you?

But is is banned in New Mexico. So there is that.

For much of the last two years associated gas in the Permian has been priced below $0.

It makes economic sense for the operators to flare or just vent.

@txsharon.bsky.social and I discussed this in an SciAm op-ed last year.
We Can Solve Climate’s Methane Crisis—And Without New Satellites or Regulations
New regulations, and satellites such as MethaneSat, very likely will not cut methane emissions. Natural gas industry economics will instead continue delaying their needed reduction

I'm breaking up with @nytimes.com. The @mattyglesias.bsky.social op-ed is gaslighting and junk.

Show me that you know nothing about oil and gas by linking to the purveyors of junk science who recruit people from Big Tobacco.

And last week I documented even more pollution blasting from Energy Transfer facilities.

Here's another blowdown at the Energy Transfer Compressor Station 176.

In all my years for documenting pollution I can honestly say that in my opinion Energy Transfer is the worst.

Big Oil company Energy Transfer is all of our neighbors. Their long history of spills, explosions, emissions, and safety violations proves that they’re harming communities.

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

― Upton Sinclair

This certainly applies to some people working in the non-profit environmental space, too. Lots of big names in the space trying to make gas seem like a clean fuel.
🤥 The myth that gas is a transition fuel is alive and well despite all the evidence to the contrary and a shocking number of people here think phasing out coal means the are on the right side of the fossil fuel phase out even if they are building new LNG and gas infrastructure.

This is a nice idea but a dangerous one.

"Ending the wasteful practice of venting and flaring would be an easy win: it used to be routine, for safety, to stop methane building up and exploding, but long-established technology renders this almost always unnecessary."

It will never happen.
