How in the holy hell did we get to a point where asking whether a suspect is in custody or not becomes something that causes political polarization? wtf?

What in the actual hell is going on that firing the BLS commissioner is NOT the top story on every news outlet in any media unless you’re squishy on Trump? This is *the* moment. He did *the thing*. He wants fake Trump-slanted *statistics* now.

F- attention spans and engagement. Focus, people.

Firing the BLS Commissioner — the wonk in charge of the statisticians who track economic reality — is an authoritarian four alarm fire.

It will also backfire: You can't bend economic reality, but you can break the trust of markets. And biased data yields worse policy.

if i were a pro-trump financial type i might view the destruction of reliable government data with the kind of anger and apprehension that might lead me to reevaluate my politics, but then if i’m a financial guy throwing my weight behind strongman rule, i’m already too stupid to breathe

If you’ve checked out of news to avoid constant stress — sorry, but today’s the day he Did The Thing. The thing that even “anti-antis” said would be a red line (we’ll see if that holds).

He got a bad economic report so fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s dictator stuff, period.

George Conway’s post was a joke. That so many think it’s plausible is because… well, it is.

I learned in Trump 1.0 that I had to stop writing unmarked satire after a couple people I admired who had reshared my posts suddenly blocked me, thinking I was serious.
**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**

**Washington, D.C. – August 1, 2025**

### President Trump Appoints Allen Weisselberg as Director of the Bureau of Labor Statistics

President Donald J. Trump today announced the appointment of Allen Weisselberg as the new Director of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

I asked ChatGPT to check the news on the BLS firing to see if a statutory authority had been named. I started to get an answer, and then it was replaced with this.

(Switching models from o4 to 4.5-preview, it told me it saw nothing wrong, and called it a “false positive”. But, still… wow.)

Why am I always awake with insomnia when global figures suddenly die? It started with Princess Di. I think the last time was Benedict XVI. It’s just kinda spooky at this point…

In the hallways this AM, @reedreports.bsky.social showed Senate Republicans a screenshot obtained by @theatlantic.com of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's messages from a Signal group chat on impending military strikes.

Several refused to read them.

Remember: whether journalists can be prosecuted under the Espionage Act for publishing leaked classified information is unadjudicated. No prior administration has ever tested this.

So: do you have any reason to think this administration WON’T?

Not as much of a joke as I’d like… Did you see Trump’s off-the-cuff reaction? “[The story] couldn’t have been very effective, because the attack was very effective”??

The man *literally* believes journalists presumptively want America to fail.

“Enemy of the people” was literal AND serious.

PLEASE stop calling this an easy decision Schumer was clearly wrong about. It just promotes division among anti-Trumpers.

See Sheldon Whitehouse’s appearance below. If you hadn’t known he was voting for a shutdown, you’d have a hard time figuring out which side he was on. Because this WAS HARD.

I (seriously, this time) totally forgot “we’re too stupid to come up with such a fiendish plan” was a go-to explanation in Trump 1.0. Until they started doing it again this time.

no the fuck we are NOT making “LGBQ+” a thing and if I see any of you motherfuckers using that acronym it’s on sight

Marsha P. Johnson did not smash in the windshield of a police car for this
‼️ The National Park Service has REMOVED mentions of transgender people being involved with Stonewall. Not only did the remove the world "Transgender" but changed "LGBTQ+" to "LGBQ+".

The federal government is attempting to erase us and take away our history.

This pride, we riot.

So, obviously, you just gotta purge the people you put in to replace the people you purged three weeks ago. I mean, who wouldn’t?

But, I forget— how many successive purges are required? Is it like tie-dye, where you need five or six cycles before it’s *really* clean?
February 13, 2025 at 10:16 PM
A seemingly small thing, but telling:

Any other administration would say “the administration is confident that every action it has taken will be found lawful”. Or “we believe that every action we have taken is lawful”.

Because they had understood their role was one constrained by facts and law.

Crazy idea: “advocacy swap”.

I dunno about you, but when I think about what this WH is doing to things in my area of expertise, it’s so breathtakingly awful and (literally) humanity-endangering, I just can’t think clearly.

So I avoid thinking too much about it.

Do others do this?

Not exaggerating when I say I would like a personal, handwritten apology from every pundit who barfed out a dozen "the left wants to change the way you talk!" op-eds based on non-mandatory guidelines in obscure PDFs.

i mean, in my entire life, the democrats have had a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate for exactly 8 months total (between Al Franken being seated in July 09 and Scott Brown taking Ted Kennedy's seat in Feb 2010) and they used it to pass the largest expansion of the welfare state since the 60s

I’ll never tire of seeing the word 禍, reminding me that, in Japanese, “maga” (まが) means something like a particularly portentous and epic (even overwrought or archaic) way to say “an evil calamity.”
