Shout out to the student journalists that have tirelessly covered their professors' ties to Epstein. My job would be much harder without them. See thread for some of my favorite recent student news pieces.

Just for reference, it is very, very possible to have a civil and productive conversation about AI and LLMs on Bluesky, and I do it every day, and people who say you can't do so are either lying to further an agenda or just have a massive skill issue. Feel free to point to this post if needed!

Hilarious people are amazed at how well Italians have taken to curling. Oh the country that centuries ago took and refined and then made bocce ball an obsession? Enjoying a game of millimeters requiring finesse and bursts of strength with plenty of downtime for coffee and gossip? Let’s investigate.

Fwiw, in my reporting of the 2024 election I found the belief that the mass deportation stuff was just for show *very prevalent* among Trump voters. Including among naturalised, non-white citizens.

An odd occasion where voters assumed the candidate was lying and so didn't let it change their vote

We need to quit it with shouting down crit of women like Vonn and Emerald Fennell as antifeminist and sexist. Will people use these openings to be misogynistic? Yes! Of course! But they would and do anyway! There’s no reason to hold back legit critique of a bad movie or say it’s off limits.

So @elienyc.bsky.social and @strictscrutiny.bsky.social have speculated that Alito may retire soon. I agree. Elie lays out the case here—it'd be odd to release a memoir in October if he's (a) still serving and (b) unable to promote it because he's hearing arguments. www.thenation.com/article/poli...
Is Samuel Alito Preparing to Disrobe?
In this installment of Elie v. US, our justice correspondent explores the week’s big legal news, including a possible Alito retirement. Also, the anti-trans mob’s latest target: tight clothing.

We don’t have to project “wins” onto the enemy. They are not your secret long-suffering ally. This staffer works for Bondi—knowingly, willingly—and is rolling her eyes at nothing in particular, and maybe the gall of them having to be questioned or even there at all.
You gotta admit, the staffers in the background keeping it real are the best part.

“Be a neighbor, not a Nazi” proved too much for MAGA to overcome in yet another American city.

This is unquestionably a massive defeat for the regime.

Never forget: Trump’s authoritarian desires are limitless. But his ability to impose them on the country is not.

The line on this keeps getting sharper. It’s like the Mag7 stocks keeping the whole market booming — at some point things this narrow holding so much burden will buckle.

Wow, almost like the media and journalism profession failed in some sort of professional duty to actually inform these low-engagement voters about what Trump was saying he wanted to do and the consequences of those plans.

There is a moral-failure-of-the-voters here, but it's not the only one.
New poll: In 2024, low-engagement voters went for Trump over Harris by 11 percentage points. But now they disapprove of the way he's handling the presidency by 13. They have moved 25 points against Trump — 2x as large as the shift for high-knowledge voters www.gelliottmorris.com/p/trump-lost...
Trump has lost the voters who weren’t paying attention in 2024
The least-engaged Americans have swung 25 points against him since 2024 — about twice the shift among everyone else. Trump has flattened the engagement gap.

Standing up against these laws, both in the USA and numerous other nations, is integral for a whole host of issues

Gaza? Minnesota? Venezuela? If these and more matter to you, then you need to get active because these laws will handicap any online organizing for MANY causes
A very good point. While calling out corporations is important, our government is trying to force av laws like KOSA and SCREEN on EVERYONE under the guise of "protecting kids". Call your reps + tell them to OPPOSE these bad bills. #SaveSpeech #Stopageverification #StopKOSA

I don’t think we should allow the secret police to round people up and sort them by race
More than 400 people, including hundreds of citizens, were “sorted” at gun point into racial and ethnic groups by 200 ICE agents who fired flash-bang grenades into cars with people inside, pointed guns at children & demanded their zip tied parents not comfort them. apple.news/Ausdx6kWtT0e...

Yet every verified MAGA chode on X dutifully calls it a riot or violent insurrection.
