@danshafer.bsky.social now don't do that thing where you're like "only 259 days until the next election, let's roll up our sleeves!" isn't this election the one that bought us a little time to breathe? 🤣

And now everyone can feel what it feels like to be a true Wisconsinite, from a deeply purple state that will alternately break your heart and renew your faith in your neighbors. My heart and soul is in this place, and on balance, I think we choose well more often than not. Tonight we did.

I know it seems small compared to all the pain and suffering this administration is inflicting. But IMLS hits real close to home, and I'm devastated.
SCOOP: DOGE notified the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS) today that the entire staff is being put on administrative leave effective immediately, I’ve learned from an agency source.

They’ll be cancelling huge swaths of grants/contracts and starting a Reduction in Force (RIF).

Interesting statement from Rep Derrick Van Orden (R, WI-3). Something to hold him to when we get to actual decisions being made:

“To be explicitly clear: today’s budget resolution did not include any cuts to specific programs. Anyone saying otherwise is lying and engaging in the fearmongering 🧵

Okay, as someone who has watched lefties use the same tactics for a decade and a half with similar results every time… I have notes.

Yall have the spirit, and I don’t want to discourage that, but we need to talk about these tactics.

So, I have an idea and would like to see who’s interested.
A regular (weekly?) activism support or discussion group on Zoom. We’d talk about and provide support for each other on actions we’re taking to resist the ongoing coup. This would be for people who feel helpless but want to DO SOMETHING. 🧵

It’s a snowy day in Wisconsin - what an excellent day to enjoy this gorgeous documentary of Wisconsin’s LGBTQ+ history. It’s free! Forever! It won a Midwest Emmy! And it’s full of people who refuse to be erased, no matter what a government says or does.

Dear Everyone, Now is the time to use your platform and your voice. Use your influence. Even if you impact one person, it can make a difference. We have power in numbers and we need to amplify each other and fight together to save our country. Now is not the time to tune it out.

Things are moving fast in the U.S. and we’re coming up on the part where our people need to lay low, so I’m gonna quiet down a bit because Reasons.

In addition to all the other organizing and resisting I’m doing, I’m leaning into community. Open house dinners at our house on the last Sunday of the month. Not everyone who follows me on here is gonna come visit IRL, but if you are, let’s be together. Sunday 2/23, 5 pm. Message for address.

Not to be alarmist, but this is the most radical presidential action I've ever seen. He's straight up seizing Congress' budget power. What do laws matter if the mad king's whims dictate what gets enforced and where money goes?

It's not a policy memo - it's a revolution. Don't let it be a quiet one.
Trump is blowing up the Constitution and dismantling democracy before our eyes.

Freezing all federal grants is a radical transformation of the relationship between the President & Congress.

It’s illegal & dictatorial & Americans will die as a result.

The bishop giving this sermon just put a target on her own back, for all the right reasons. Bless her. The example she's setting on Day 2 of this nightmare is one we'll need to follow.
Epic courage here.
Wow. Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde fearlessly calls out Trump and Vance to their faces. This is heroic.

Among all the other TikTok ban weirdness, here’s a thought: the government just demonstrated how quickly and easily they can turn an online community off and back on. It’s a demonstration of power.

Tonight, scammers spoofed my mom’s phone number, called me from what seemed to be her number, and demanded $3,000 or they’d shoot her. (Seriously! Can you imagine getting that phone call?) She’s traveling so this was more plausible than it would be if she’d been at home with me.
