Made myself a goodnight hot chocolate with a shot of dark gold rum. Nobody judge me. It’s virtually still Christmas.

Pretty treacherous conditions out there, right across the UK. Stay safe everyone xx

Let me check with my investment advisor. Will it be the vegan omega 369 or the Vitamin D3?

Falmouth lifeboat launched a while back. I’m safely indoors but cannot imagine how awful it must be out on the sea tonight. And don’t forget, those crews are volunteers. Local people who were also safely in their own home when the call for help came but still prepared to risk their lives.

Bit wild out there. My room’s creaking like a ship’s cabin.

Storm’s hitting now. Shaking the house - my attic room is at the gable end of the roof and it’s pretty exposed up here on the clifftop. The lights have flickered a few times so making sure everything’s charged up. Batten down the hatches and stay safe everyone!
The highest gust speed as a result of Storm Goretti is currently 99 mph, recorded at St Mary's Airport in the Isles of Scilly, making it a new record for the site

Here are the top gust speeds so far 👇

It seems me having big plans for a new year pretty much scuppers them from the get-go. Although when you’re as broke as I am ‘big plans’ are somewhat limited in scope. I could do without being ill though. All I’ve done for days is sleep and cough. Haven’t even done the washing.

HT @salimotxo.bsky.social for sending me back to watch old Flight of the Conchords videos on YouTube, even if my ribs now hurt even more.

Can’t believe it’s already a week since I was communing with giant owls in the mountains of south Wales and now I’m holed up in my attic in Cornwall with a bug, hiding from 100mph storms.

Fell back into deep sleep for over two hours. Dreamt me and the band were on tour in some kind of deep Texas-type place. We were travelling in one of those massive monster lorries, all lit up like a Christmas tree, to the kind of bar venues where fights are part of the entertainment.

My policy of paying cavalier attention to ‘use by’ dates continues. I’m a firm believer in waste not want not, particularly when it’s food. One of the young assistants at the Co-op said a while back “You wouldn’t believe what we have to throw away, it’s shocking.” It IS shocking. And shameful.

The scammers have started up again already - first text of the morning from an unknown number reads: “Hey! Free for a quick chat?” which instantly marks it out as spam because nobody in the UK would dream of suggesting a quick chat at 8am.

Found an unopened pot of tomato and chilli salsa at the back of the fridge. That put a nice kick in the sinuses.

I’ve reached the mopey stage of this bug. My ribs and head hurt and I feel worse than I did yesterday. I need this to go away quickly - I’ve got an online job interview next Monday and I don’t want them to think I look sickly!

I can hear the young student downstairs laughing with her boyfriend. They’re always laughing, and if not she’s usually singing. It must be the happiest room in the entire house.

The only cough syrup they had in the shop was £8 so I bought a Wispa bar instead and had a shot of honey mead when I got in which had much the same effect.

Didn’t have enough breath to go further than the shop by the docks and it’s too rainy to hang around (“catching your death” as my mother would’ve said) but at least I got out of the room. And out of bed.
January 7, 2026 at 5:26 PM
The thing with not getting a bug for over a year is you forget how crap they are. Feel like death warmed up. I really need to get some shopping and air but haven’t even managed to get dressed yet.

What is this new-fangled trend for online job interviews? I did one over Christmas that wasn’t even with a human (although if I get through that sift, the next one will be with actual people) and I have one on Monday with a human panel on Teams. What happened to meeting in person?
