… and many of those choices, especially walking & taking transit are social experiences that help you better understand the community in which you live. Getting out of the car makes you happier & healthier!
Never forget, car dependency is the opposite of freedom.

What’s more “free” than cars, you ask?

Choices.

This political cartoon gets at the vapid nature of the Carney government (read Canadian oligarchy’s) #NationBuilder programs. They build wealth for resource developers, but will do little for most Canadians. #cdnpoli

Today will only be three degrees above the average in #ldnont, and lately we have been closer to seasonal weather, but this is a good reminder that our planet is not okay (& it is because of choices we make) #ClimateEmergency

WATCH: If you REALLY want to understand a BIG reason why cycling [aka riding a bike] is so dangerous in North America, and one of the biggest villains in the origin story of our unsafe status quo, invest some time watching this one, by NOT JUST BIKES (aka @theurbanistagenda.com here). Then share it.

I am often inspired by President @barackobama.bsky.social. He models what leadership should look like & reminds us of the value & dignity of every person.
A real president does this.

Thank you to every veteran who’s worn the uniform and carried the weight for the rest of us — just respect 🇺🇸

This ad appears in last week’s @theeconomistnews.bsky.social. It prioritizes #ClimateAdaptation over the battle against #ClimateChange (which has been lost). This shift is defeatist & absolves behaviours that are making our world a dangerous place for us & our non-human neighbours. adapt2win.org

I’ve been thinking about this a lot as we enter into this “nation-building” phase of Canada’s civic life. “Nation-building” is essentially code for staples development, which has its place, but did not “make” Canada. This iteration seems like it will really just enrich the already wealthy. #cdnpoli
Being good at making money doesn’t mean you’re good at anything else. It definitely doesn’t mean your opinions on anything else are important. It most likely just means you’re ruthless, which is the primary trait of most rich people.

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

I do not understand how we got to a place where we collectively shrug about the fact that we have created a world where #ClimateChange will devastate many of our lives, especially our children’s. Instead of taking action, our political leaders have decided doing nothing is best.
Incredibly short-sighted and irresponsible, and completely disconnected from the real values & priorities of Vancouverites. This move would be awful not only for Vancouver, but also for all the cities that Vancouver’s leadership has inspired over decades of North American sustainability leadership.

Here's the biggest PSE story you haven't heard yet: the Canada Student Grant for low-income students is being cut from $4200/year to $3000/year as of next August. It's implicit in the budget tables but the government is too chickenshit to actually say so directly.

Given just how much work needs to be done on building back watershed health, this policy turn makes me nervous. Local, municipal control is important for protecting local environments. This policy change seems like another provincial plan to erode local government. #swont #onpoli #ldnont

We should all be doing something that we can name to reverse course on #climatechange. In #onpoli, we need to invest much more heavily in getting people out of their cars, especially for trips in and between cities. It is doable, but it involves real investment & vision.
