Your reelection doesn't matter, your approval rating doesn't matter, your sense of being a bigwig in your professional circle doesn't matter, what matters is saving the fucking United States of America

seems to me that those democrats inclined not to fight perceive themselves as living through a somewhat ordinary cycle of presidential overreach and backlash and not something much more significant and dangerous

Oh, that's some bullshit
Oh, well, that makes selling out worthwhile. Just because your GOP buddies might have conspired to overthrow an election doesn't mean that they should be investigated for it.

Absolutely.
The far right took over the GOP through the long process of taking over local and county organizations and the left can do the same. It’s not an instant fix but it actually works.

Join your county Democratic Party! There are shockingly few people willing to show up and those are the people who get to make decisions

The people were on our side. We were building momentum to help save our democracy. We could have won - the premium increase notices were just starting.
And giving in now will embolden him. Things will likely get worse.

Standing up to a tyrant - who is willing to impose pain as leverage to compel loyalty or acquiescence - is hard. You can convince yourself that yielding stops the pain and brings you back to "normal".
But there is no "normal". Submission emboldens the tyrant. The threat grows.

i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.
If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?

Quick note about this again; the 100 mile zone has nothing to do with Border Patrol’s ability to operate. They can operate anywhere in the country.
The 100 mile zone is ONLY about where they have heightened stop and search powers.
It’s not a jurisdictional thing.

Why is Border Patrol in Chicago? It's not inside 100 mile limit.

To be fair to Trump, we've all been abruptly woken up from a nap and not known what day it was.
Remember the time Obama personally caught a fainting woman during his speech — rather than just blankly staring like a sociopath?

I think the viral posts used a qualifier: "contested"
If there was anyone running against them, they lost.
If there was anyone running against them, they lost.
Viral posts about how Moms For Liberty had zero wins on election night...aren't true. They're misinformation, even dis-info.
M4L did have a number of school board candidates win. You can verify that information pretty easily.
They had *A LOT* of losses and their power isn't what it once was.

I’ll keep pushing this line of analysis because I’m increasingly convinced the clearest path out of this mess is for Dems to adopt a relentless anti-corruption, anti-inequality, anti-oligarchy, pro-democracy platform. The Dem leadership hasn’t realized it yet, but they’re now a reform party.

this has been one of my central arguments the past ten years. the theory underpinning the anti-democratic elements of the american constitutional order is wrong!
The more democratic elements of the American constitutional and economic order are actually throwing up road blocks to Trumpism. Protests and boycotts and low level courts and juries and cetera. Elite actors on the other hand are all too frequently caving. Fascinating study in who actually cares!
