Fantastic piece putting the Bari Weiss Experiment in perspective
As it happens, I have experience with high-level government demands to stop an explosive, accurate story from running, and I also have experience with 60 Minutes spiking a story I was involved in, so I have thoughts about the travesty at CBS. If you want some journalism anecdotes, here are a lot:

Memory lane meal from my New England childhood: ham steak, baked beans, and canned brown bread. I had to order the bread online because it's not real popular outside of New England (more Boston, but my CT family ate this occasionally).

I haven't had a mix plate in almost 5 years.
Ordered some Ono Hawaiian tonight, and it's like ... 85% there. Pretty good. I don't know if it's actually not as good or if it's just the lack of ocean air.

When Teen Vogue switches from "How to tell if he's into you" to "How to keep tabs on ICE agents surveilling your neighborhood," does that means we're officially great again?

I remember learning a few years ago that most orange cats are males and I looked it up and it was like 80%. Somehow I didn't catch that about 99.9% of calicos are female, which is even more impressive.
And the reason is connected. Orange is carried on the X, and to get a male calico you need an XXY

Your unique Santa traditions?

Santa didn't wrap my presents but did wrap my husband's - I was an only child, he wasn't.
Due to work schedules, both our families did our big celebration on the Eve. His family also did Santa that night but I woke up to my Santa gifts in the morning.

I’m going to need to see the declination memos from DoJ where they declined to prosecute the Epstein co-conspirators, and I’m gonna need to see them for every single person they declined to prosecute.

Ok. Now had a chance to check and, well, at least some docs do appear to be straight up classic redaction fail. And there are some *interesting* bits here.

There are two kinds of libertarians. The ones who are fascists but think only private companies should be allowed to do fascism. And the ones who genuinely believe in freedom but get the economics badly wrong. The first ones really showed their true colors in 2016.

"Get the principals on camera" is such a telling phrase here, because it tells us that for Weiss there's no world in which the victims of these horrific actions can actually be seen as the subjects of the story: They're background noise, and the people who matter are the ones sending them.
Weiss concluded: “We need to be able to make every effort to get the principals on the record and on camera. To me, our viewers come first, not a listing schedule or anything else. And that is my North Star, and I hope it's the North Star of every person in this newsroom.”

When he picks that rare issue I agree with him on, he speaks so clearly and I agree so hard.
Rand Paul: "All these designations are steps towards war -- calling drug runners terrorists, saying, 'Oh, if they have a designation'-- Well, how'd they get it? We gave it to them. Why is the former president of Honduras released? So some narcoterrorists are okay & others we're going to blow up"

honestly, “it’s because they’re still mad about the New Deal” is a pretty good guiding hypothesis for a lot of stuff
The standard story was that 1950s religious revivals were about contrasting America with the godless commies of the USSR, but I found material that hinted at an older well funded campaign that reframed the revival as a corporate pushback against the New Deal.

So I followed that unexpected thread!

"But NPR identified more than a dozen files released by the DOJ on Friday that are no longer available Saturday afternoon, including one that shows President Trump's photo on a desk among several other photographs. The removed files also show various works of art, including those containing nudity."
Available to download Friday, some Epstein files no longer there Saturday afternoon
An NPR analysis of the Epstein files shows some documents, originally available on Friday, are no longer on the Department of Justice's "Epstein Library" website as the DOJ releases more files.
