The other thing is, if you're into, say, Pokemon, there's no shortage of Pokemon merch you can buy. Games, toys, manga, figures, trading cards, anime blu rays, etc. But if your interest is furries or your own original characters, the only place that money can go is into commissions from the fandom.
This fandom has a reputation for being "suspiciously wealthy" but the truth is most furries just love and value art and people so much that they want to use their money for art and supporting artists so they can make a living doing what they love. It's a cycle of genuine passion I think.
