Once again, the New York Times gives the dataviz community an opportunity to reflect on its purpose.

Can everything be quantified and turned into a chart?

Most important: what are the consequences of a chart?

If words matter, charts matter too.
Of course the NYT sees the "DEI" stuff positively & is neutral on anti-trans discrimination

🎂Happy #Rstats birthday!

Does that make it 24 or just 6 leap-years old?

"If that data becomes unavailable or is seen as untrustworthy, it could have far-reaching consequences across politics, business, health and beyond."

We all lose if interference with all of this critical information continues. As a data journalist, it is a terrifying prospect.

For perspective, about 150,000 federal workers voluntarily leave the government every year. Another 50,000 to 60,000 are fired for disciplinary or performance reasons, or because their appointments or funds expired. Around 3,400 die each year while employed. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/07/u...
How Many Federal Worker Resignations Would Be a Lot?
Sixty-five thousand have submitted resignations as part of Elon Musk’s “fork in the road” offer. But 150,000 voluntarily leave every year anyway.
