My doomer-worry about AI is not that the LLMs become omnipotent and take over the world but that the wealthy and powerful use it as a means to consolidate power and marginalize or lay off skilled workers and also everything about our technological and political and social life gets worse

I have a new paper. We look at ~all stats articles in political science post-2010 & show that 94% have abstracts that claim to reject a null. Only 2% present only null results. This is hard to explain unless the research process has a filter that only lets rejections through.

I've been thinking about this a lot. There's a major tension here between "get my data cleaned quickly, efficiently, and as a responsible steward of my research resources" and "teach the next generation how to conduct research." Anyone who tells you the answer is easy is kidding themselves
Claude code will inevitably reduce dramatically the hiring of undergraduate RAs which will further increase the gap between what students are taught and how we conduct research.

So, we can all agree that reading, interacting and *languaging* together are very important, but we should also be cautious about how we respond to the screen time vs reading books discourse we see a lot of now. As I said, she may well be right and I agree with a lot of her points.
