And the BL Word of the Week of the Year, as voted by listeners:

temu (derog.): a cheap or knock-off version

We think it reflects a complicated relationship with companies we do business with. Even as we use them, we feel the shadiness.

Each year, word of the year gets darker. ‘Six-seven’ may be annoying – but it’s bucked that trend | Coco Khan
Some might regard this slang as ‘brain rot’, but the first word of the year just for tweens and teenagers could be the most hopeful development of 2025, says writer and podcaster Coco Khan

Seems sensible.
Merriam-Webster’s human editors have chosen ‘slop’ as the 2025 Word of the Year.

New episode just out! It features an interview with John Kelly aka @mashedradish.bsky.social on #WOTY2025 and the whole Word of the Year phenomenon. Word nerd heaven or cynical marketing ploy from BiG dIcTiOnArY? spotifycreators-web.app.link/e/pnwYbTXR3Yb

We've just recorded a new episode with @lynneguist.bsky.social on the recent flurry of articles about young people and the supposed Americanisation of their language. And how we've been here before. Coming soon!

We've got a new episode out! It features an interview with Dani Yin and Cheryl Wakslak about their recent paper on gendered use of exclamation marks in digital communication and it's a really good conversation: open.spotify.com/episode/5KzP...

This new LOTM Starter Pack is slowly starting to grow. It takes some time and searching, but today, the latest additions are people who have been interviewed for the @languageonthemove.bsky.social podcast.
Key takeaways: there are quite a few episodes and only some are on Bluesky, but they include:

Advice welcome - I'm moving as much as I can off Spotify (for various reasons) so where's a good place to link to for the pod? Where do other people use that's not Spotify-related? And any good alternatives to what used to be Anchor (now Spotify) for uploading pods?

We've been away for a while but episode 75 is finally here. We talk about accent discrimination, attitudes to teachers' accents and about what accent prejudice tells us about wider social attitudes. #Linguistics open.spotify.com/episode/5wnC...

New episode (number 75!) coming very soon and it's a bumper episode featuring 3 linguists, 1 teacher, 4 podders and a Lang in the News segment.

No sooner had we finished recording a Lang in the News segment than the Telegraph runs the same kind of story again. It's uncanny...
I hate to say it but The Telegraph is running its regular 'woke nonsense' story again. It's *literally* the same story every week, even down to the same cast of talking heads describing it as Marxist thought policing or leftist linguistic gatekeeping.

We've been having a bit of a break since June but we'll be back soon with some episodes about attitudes to accents, especially teachers' accents, and some Lang in the News! Watch this space 👀

Interesting read, with so much detail. Made me think of the rise of "y'all" nationwide (as the country becomes more southern) and the decline of the southern drawl in places like Atlanta (as the south becomes more like the rest of the country).
Got a story out today about something I’ve been fascinated by for years: From Atlanta hip hop to Bama RushTok, here’s how and why the South has taken such a firm grip on modern American culture. Gift link: www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
The United States Is Southern Now
From booming metros to culture-defining exports, the South has quietly become a demographic powerhouse and a battleground for the country’s identity.

It's nearly the end of term, so thanks to all the linguists who have appeared on the show this academic year. We've had some great interviews and met some lovely people.
And thanks to all of you for listening. We'll be back in the Autumn term and are getting a few things lined up for then.

At least one reason why I mostly don't write accents in my comics is basically this. Who gets written with an accent and who doesn't is always a tell.
This. It's like how Southerners used to transcribe Oasis as saying "fookin'". No. They said "fuckin'". Southerners say "fahrkin".
Wet blanket here. These stupid things never fucking work because *obviously* people in Manchester already read Aldi as Aldeh. They'll read Aldeh as a different word. You London-centric pricks. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
