Drained #peatlands do not only emit CO2, but they also subside, causing increased flood risks & problems to infrastructure. This issue is long known, so we traced concepts, measurements approaches, models and data published over more than 100 years: doi.org/10.1002/eco....
#Moorbodenmonitoring
There are three photos related to the measurement of peatland subsidence. The photo on the left shows a so-called extensometer, which is used to measure surface movement by terms of a steel cable and a spring. The middle photo shows a pole which shows the peatland surface in 1836. The pole is several meters high, meaning that this amount of peat has been lost or subsided. The photo on the right shows a tachymeter, i.e. a modern surveying device, and a person holding the surveying rod with the measurement prism.
