I love a self portrait poem
I've really been enjoying the poems published on NewPoetry.ca (curated by George Murray), like "Self-Portrait as Medusa" by Rachelle-Anne Lawka. There's a new poem each week, so don't forget to check back!

Got a ride to the airport. The driver (in his 70s I think, from Northern Ireland) was so interesting. Asked lots of questions about Hong Kong, how HKers feel about China, etc. Then we got into Canada. He hates Trudeau (immigration) hates Ford (corrupt), but think PP is an honest man. I was like… 🤯

Goddammit Minnesotans are making me believe in humans
Half the street corners around here have people--from every walk of life, including republicans--standing guard to watch for suspicious vehicles, which are reported to a robust and entirely decentralized network that tracks ICE vehicles and mobilizes responders.

Holy shit.

Renee Good was alive when the bystander physician asked to check her pulse. She was alive when ICE refused to let him help. She was alive when they told him “I don’t care.”

My first time reading a story with Toisanese, my grandparents’ language. It’s forcing me to read much slower to sound out every word the way my grandma would’ve said it—super different from the Cantonese I’m used to. I kinda love it.

I read 47 books this year! I have been wanting to read more widely across genres and I’m really happy I was (mostly) able to do that in 2025. Here are some of my favourites 🤓

Great article and accompanying photography. My partner is an Indigenous midwife and FUN FACT Doug Ford's gov't has been—you guessed it—slashing healthcare budgets + chose to waste money taking Ontario midwives to court bc they don't want to pay them fairly 🤡
for @thewalrus.ca I wrote about birth sovereignty and the decades-long efforts of Indigenous midwives to reclaim the right to give birth in community. honoured to have Amber Bracken's incredible photos accompanying the story:
