Flash Point's budget:
-Paying authors
-Website hosting
-Fulfilling Kickstarter rewards

No one but the authors makes a dime off FPSF. We'd love that to change, and we'd love to pay authors more on top, but that would require 100x the subscriptions we currently have...
If magazine teams were paid fairly and writer rates increased, mag budgets would be $200k+. Minimum.

If you can, subscribe. That’s regular, renewable revenue mags can use to plan for the future.

This industry is sustained on free labour and free content.

Passion is high, but so is burnout.

Editing is my favorite part! 1st drafts are a big tub of fermented grain. Is it booze? Sure, but there's still a lot of junk mixed in. You don't just want it to burn; you want it to go down smooth.

In edits you get to distill it, clarify it, make it something folks want to put on their top shelf.
Is editing boring, cumbersome, confusing, inexact, opaque, time-consuming, and tedious? YES YES YES. That's normal. AI might be able to alleviate some of that discomfort, but at great personal cost. This is not a "doing it the hard way is more noble" thing. It's the WHOLE of the thing period.

A first for me: two stories published in one week 😊

100-Foot Crow is the place to go for drabbles and I'm thrilled to be working with them again, so please check out "Spam Filter"!

My story "The NPC's Lot" is out today with Androids and Dragons! It's a collection of five vignettes highlighting the sorts of characters that are usually ignored in most fantasy tales. I'm super excited to see it in print - thanks to @jennarainhm.bsky.social for believing in it!

I know it's because I'm about to be a father, but this story hit me like a truck. Not sure I've ever read a more affecting 100 words.

Me wanting to compliment a female coworker like I would one of my strongman gym bros:

"Dang big dog, looking huge!"
Until you work out the answer to that question (and maybe do some pondering on the difference between creepy statements and non-creepy--the rule of thumb "would you say it to [insert big strong very masculine guy]?" works pretty well), you'd do best to keep your tongue behind your teeth.

Yes but which one survived the inevitable Highlander-style showdown?

Novel writers: how long does that first draft take you?

I'm approaching the 5-month mark in my latest WIP and while I'm still really enjoying myself, there's also a fatigue and readiness to be done with it. Curious how long it takes for others to hit that threshold.

It's nutty how much social media has warped our expectations to the point that a great many people feel they are owed your private opinions on every public matter.

MRK should reply to every single person with "Mind your own business."
Sometimes when someone doesn't comment about the latest controversy it's because they've spent a month in the hospital with a family member and have to pretend everything is fine because they have a new book coming out.

But feel free to send angry messages because they didn't share an opinion.

I can't really get into this in too much detail without revealing just how much Skyrim I played in college...

But yes.
OK, quick question: Do you know what a draugur/draugr is (without googling it)?

All I want for Christmas are some book recs:

I'm looking for epic/adventure fantasy where humor is a feature. My prime example would be Kings of the Wyld by Nicolas Eames. The more recently published, the better! #amreading
