I just filled out the #sfwa survey on AI. I encourage all SFWA folk to do the same. Part of my response below. #NoAI

Hey, my first two (beginner) lamas are now complete! I was quite intimidated. But I still completed the first one and messed with the colors on the second one. And all the mistakes I managed to make along the way? Well, that just made the process feel like writing, personally satisfying.

Wow
I'm now never taking a Waymo
I make automated trains for a living and lemme tell you there is a backup for "the network is down"
a power outage is unusual, but not so unusual it can be waved away as an "edge case"... these vehicles should be pulling over and parking if they can't operate safely, not piling up in intersections and clogging roads
“Traffic lights across the city were down, seemingly confusing the driverless cars — and halting them in their tracks. Riders and pedestrians posted videos of Waymos stuck at intersections, long lines of drivers behind them.” missionlocal.org/2025/12/sf-w...

I don’t know how to identify a bad parent anymore. But sweeties, you’re doing great!

Happy solstice eve. I'm off to the library to pick up some hold requests, followed by couch time with the doggo, cats, partner, and my latest zen hack, embroidery. It took a bout of strep followed by flu to discover the satisfaction of creating something other than stories. #silverlinings

It's time to walk away from my laptop. SFWA declawing itself when it comes to AI is such a betrayal of its membership and all the volunteer hours and years folks have put into the organization, I grinding my damn teeth.

How could this possibly be the official stance? This feels like an "all sides have merit" stance for what is both plagarism and corporate machinations driven by greed. What the heck is the point of this decision? I do not feel represented or protected.
Very disappointed in the new Nebula Award eligibility information from SFWA that allows partially-generated works to be on the ballot. See 9.11.2.

the horror of what ICE is doing feels like it is really really really breaking through to people, and it's opening up big overdue conversations on other topics (that prisons have always been this inhumane, that Homeland Security has always been this racist) if we wanted to wedge those cracks open

I seem to have regained a writing routine and lost some focus on other things, such as my day job. Feels like I'm back in balance!
As a side note, I've passed the halfway mark on my targetted edits of my novella Meissen Eyes. I think another pass is necessary. I keep slipping into line-level work.

I've almost finished setting back at home after @worldfantasy2025.bsky.social. I'm still getting up hours too early and I still have a stack of books waiting to be shelved. The fact that the shelves are already full isn't helping ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

One way I find my writing style consciously changing in the face of AI is my reduced use of the emdash. It sits differently these days.

Reminder that I have a new story in this awesome anthology with awesome writers:
You can also find copies of Storyteller: A Tanith Lee Tribute Anthology at the book table near the art show (part of the main convention space)!

Goodbye Brighton! Headed home now. It’s been a great trip!

I’m wrapping up my visit to Brighton. @worldfantasy2025.bsky.social has been brilliant! There are still a few copies of Storyteller at the book table by the Art Room. If you want, grab a copy and help me not have to lug them all back to Massachusetts!

I had an epic moment yesterday @worldfantasy2025.bsky.social. The Remembering Tanith Lee panel was a gem. John Kaiine and I in conversation with participation from audience members like @clhellisen.bsky.social & @theodoragoss.bsky.social. Then a twenty minute wander through the hotel labyrinth w/

I'm currently in Brighton @worldfantasy2025.bsky.social. In classic Julie-style, I'm hiding away for the morning, getting work done and recharging my social batteries. But I'll be in on the Remembering Tanith Lee panel at 4pm in the Edinburgh Panel Room 3! If you're at the convention, come on by!

@jefferyford8.bsky.social just nudged me into giving more. Pragmatic and actionable and incredibly important. "1 in every 7 children."
SNAP is running dry without govt. funding. If you can afford it, donate to your local food bank. 42 million people in 22 million households are relying on this program to eat. 1 in every 7 children.

I'm packing up for my trip to the UK. I'll be visiting in London and then heading on to the @worldfantasy2025.bsky.social in Brighton for Thursday Oct. 30th.

Friday at 4pm, I'll be on the "Remembering Tanith Lee" panel with #IanWhates and her widower #JohnKaiine.

Raise a glass. I finished the Meissen Eyes redraft and created a punch list of 11 items I need to cover in targeted edits, the selected the 1st three I'm going to address. I even dug up some notes I wrote in 2023 that and found a gem or two. It's time to stop for the day!

ICYMI, we're open to submissions by authors of historically marginalized backgrounds for this entire month!

We want to read more works by Black writers, Indigenous writers, disabled writers, gay and lesbian and trans writers, and other folks whose voices must be heard!
