People on this place, man...

Tried this. Despite a lot of 'less like this' and blocking a good list of keywords (also pictured) I'm now getting a lot of people posting SCREENSHOTS of posts getting mad at these exact things. Bluesky *really* wants you to be mad at American politics.

I'll keep trying.

Time to take a bit of a lazy Saturday and see if I can make Bluesky usable. I wonder if with enough strategic blocking and 'less like this'-ing I can get politics off my feed (and avoid the weirdo NSFW that bsky seems to try and replace it with as well)?

Time will tell.

It's so weird to me that Reddit is the *dumbest* site. Not the most evil or the worst, but just the dumbest. Whenever I see something incredibly stupid in the written word sitting in a really highly visible way, it's invariably on Reddit.

One hand on the wheel, one hand playing Bejewelled. Is there any better way to commute to work?

One of the interesting things to me is how often people don't believe in markets. I don't mean 'dislike markets', or 'think we should organise on some other principle'.

I mean 'simply don't think supply and demand work at all'.

This site is so weird, man. "Don't celebrate cold-blooded murder, no matter who is being killed" somehow making you a hard-right conservative is such a central example of Blueskyism.

When people think of Bluesky that's the view they think of and it makes me sad as the tech is actually very good.

This Silksong bird room, man.

Whenever I see the 'chatbots are completely useless!' posts, I wonder what people are using them *for*. My most common usage is evaluating some household problem (picture or similar) with a plan to resolve it and sources to prove it's not hallucinating.

Incredibly useful tech.

Guy without any friends: We should stage a revolution!

If you can't get five guys to get beers with you, how much lower are your chances when it comes to getting five thousand to rise up violently?

Re: Hulk Hogan, it's so weird that the majority opinion on this site seems to be 'revenge porn is cool provided it happens to a guy we don't like'.

Knowing a lot of facts and memorizing a lot of things is actually incredibly useful, even in the Google/ChatGPT era. Much like knowing your times tables.

Younger people who haven't internalized all multiplications to 12x12 don't get how powerful it is.

You ivory tower intellectuals must not lose touch with the world of hard currency. It is all very well and good to pursue these high-minded theories, but research grants are expensive. You must justify your existence by providing not only knowledge but concrete and profitable applications as well.

My most controversial opinion re.:democracy is that it doesn't really matter who wins close elections.

The purpose of the system is to demonstrate every winner has huge popular backing and could in theory convert that into military force, thereby avoiding the need for actual force.

Mass reduction of living standards across society to facilitate building more iron mines.
Confess your crimes to me

A really sad truth is that the sciences were begging for reform - money for replication studies, more policing of p-hacking and the like mandated at the top - would've gone an incredibly long way.

Feels like that same need for reform made them vulnerable to destruction.

One of the things that excites me about Subnautica 2 is that almost every change in BZ was a downgrade from the original (still a really solid game).

Lot of experimentation that didn't work that is now hopefully just done and dusted.

Cooking feels like a lost skill for zoomers in the same way car maintenance was a lost skill for millennials.

Not entirely sure why that is, though. Cars got more complicated but cooking got easier, if anything.

If you're interacting with an LLM, it's not a bad idea to set up instructions to make it seem more inhuman. I have mine set up to say "GLEEB" interspersed through its sentences at random to remind me that I'm not talking to a human being.

Microblogging is so weird.

"I agree with you and think [x] is correct, except that people do find [x] in my experience confusing when compared to [y]".

"Hmm this guy sounds like a shill for [y]"

I'll stop quoting Bertrand Russell in a second (might not) but his explanation of the psychology of the far-left is astonishingly on point. He wrote this over 100 years ago. Absolutely nothing has changed.

IT finally made us all update to Windows 11. Crazy to think this has been out for four years and is ostensibly made by a trillion-dollar company.
