I’m lucky to have a garden office/shed/cave. When I work from there, Exponential the Cat often knocks on the door, then dashes to the house to wait for me to follow and let her in. Isn't that second-order Theory of Mind? #ToM #cat

Hello, everyone. I'm seeking views from fellow #Autistic, #ADHD, and #AuDHD people. My goal is to ensure my PhD project is driven by community needs and priorities right from the start. If you can spare an hour to help, contact me here or via email (address is in the image). Thanks! #AutRes

Really interesting paper on gender disparities in autism coverage in British newspapers.

Grim finding: a significant subset of the "autistic girls" articles were about gender transition and misgendered those involved. Which also means there's *even less* coverage of autistic girls than it appears.

New research showing how far we have to go, in the media. They looked at UK newspapers to see how often they mention e.g. autistic girl, boy, mum, dad etc. No. of times the Press mentioned autistic grandmothers?

None.

Articles on autism are usually negative, and specifically, are sh***y in depictions of autistic people.

So, "Autistic people should be involved in guiding newspapers to more inclusive coverage, & it is crucial that newspapers respect the community's language preferences."

Interesting paper (open access) looking in detail at autistic representation - including the differences between how boys and girls (or mothers/fathers) are portrayed (eg girls more likely to be shown as part of a group, not an individual, and mainly in discussing gender difference).

Thank you very much, @georgejulian.bsky.social. There are additional visuals in the paper (open access) that focus on changes over time, contrasts between tabloids and broadsheets, as well as left- and right-leaning publications.
Really interesting work here on #media presentation/discussion and narratives around #autism.

Really like the table visual on the right for an overview of biased/skewed lens on life.

Will be thinking more about this (also mother blame, of course)
Results are also available with visualisations. 🧵10/11

Thank you @drjobillington.bsky.social and many thanks for these great prompts!
Interesting study on how autism and autistic people are described in the press. The finding relating to mother (and not father) blame jumped out at me and reminded me of the work of @sarasiobhan.bsky.social and @profkrc.bsky.social.
