Enjoyer of motion pictures, motor vehicles, and based ball. Limey-Canuck dual passport wielder. Uncommonly cheerful for a Gen X'er, unless you insist on spelling SEVEN as SE7EN, in which case I wish upon you many Biblical plagues.
Reminds me of something Shea Serrano once said on a Ringer podcast about how feels certain animal species are or are not inherently racist, and how his own dog would look at him sometimes and Serrano was sure that if the dog could talk he would be using racial slurs against him.

Thanks to Tubi, I am now sort of obsessed with a grotty B movie I threw out a VHS copy of in the '90s because I felt even having it in my home brought bad mojo. What a time to be alive.

I think I could narrow it down to two particular instances, both of which were very much "You had to be there" kind of circumstances but both of which put me out of commission for at least a full twenty minutes after losing my shit.

Over at The Other Place, I recently noted that TOP GUN was Tony Scott's second best film about a fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy (the best being 1990's REVENGE, which opens with Kevin Costner's character retiring from the Navy). Still true. But Jesus Christ does TOP GUN still look gorgeous.

Not to steal Lupino's thunder or anything, given that she's the focal point of these screenings, but Robert Ryan's my guy and his presence alone pulls me into ON DANGEROUS GROUND every time.
"Ida Lupino, Triple Threat" continues with ON DANGEROUS GROUND starting Sunday Dec 15. SUN 8:00 MON/TUE 7:00 8:45 www.trylon.org/film/on-dang...

There are virtually no upsides to getting older---every single little thing about it just sucks a dog's asshole. But one of the worst things is something nobody ever tells you about: Getting misty-eyed during movies you've already seen literally one hundred and fifty times sans waterworks.

Even making the usual allowances for trolls, bots, dipshit edgelords, etc., one thing I think I've reached my lifetime capacity for are comments on stories of tragically drowned migrants basically saying "Good!". Politics aside...what the fuck is wrong with these people? They are subhuman eels.

My homie Guy has a new podcast with the man whose annually updated paperback movie guide was a staple of cinephile side tables growing up, the legendary film historian and critic Leonard Maltin! As if those two hosses weren't enough of a draw, they've also already covered my favourite movie!
Hey, it's your man and *the* man (that's living legend Leonard Maltin to you) talking up PULP FICTION on the Movie Guide podcast! Come for the appreciation of QT, stay for the duelling Christopher Walken impressions!

"What's a book or series that you read as a kid that almost nobody seems to read or remember these days?"

I had not one but two teachers (albeit at the same school) who read us Shel Silverstein's "Where The Sidewalk Ends" and "A Light In The Attic" in their entirety. Is Silverstein still A Thing?

THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS (2001): No, I still don't understand why I'm largely ambivalent about every other Wes Anderson movie while deeply loving this one, other than finding this the most aesthetically pleasing, yet also the most emotionally devastating.

"I've had a rough year, Dad."

I thought about going for a deep cut here, but you know what? Let's not get cute. There's a reason this one is known and loved far and wide, and it's because soul doesn't come any more soulful than this and funk doesn't get any funkier than this:

My favourite part of that Random Roles: Ironside just absolutely ethering my guy James Glickenhaus, his director on the immortal MCBAIN (1991), basically for being a talentless rich dilettante. I like Glickenhaus's work (I fucking love 1988's SHAKEDOWN), but I also like Ironside giving zero fucks.
Here's the incredible anecdote from Ironside's AV Club Random Roles interview, which is a lot better than I remembered it to be.

RONIN (1998):

"Larry, can you tell Vincent what it is you'll need?"
"Something very fast...Audi S8. Something that can shove a little bit."
"I'm going to have it for you by the afternoon."

Fuck yeah.
