The UK co-operative movement was once strong. It can and will be better.

Since 2012, we've had x2 UN Int. Years of Cooperation, yet the movement stands still.
Paul is an unsung hero of the UK movement. Demonised by former board members of CUK because of his views. Yet, the man stands on the right side of history. The team at CI remember him from his work in the music industry. He knows what's, what.

Ecology are a challenging partner for the movement. They blow hot and cold depending on the mood and view of the ceo. Are they cooperative...? Probably not. Admittedly, there a mutual.

The UK movement has very quickly become the laughing stock of Europe. Yes, we left the Union, but that doesn't dissolve the wider responsibility. #coops

Don't forget this is still the #iyc2025. Poor isn't it. National bodies have a responsibility to make it meaningful. If they fail to do sox who is to blame? Cooperators? No. #coops

The real question is how the workers are feeling..? Not just showy, #iyc2025 bravado and 'look at this'. Remember when inspirational figures like Pauline Green, led the movement...?

The CI team have been away for the summer, attempting to relieve ourselves of the challenges of the UK movement. Canada, Peru and Egypt were some of the far off lands that we love visited.

Invigorated and enthused by what we've seen, what do we return to. Ah yes, the UK movement in a sorry state.

Let's be honest with members and supporters of the movement. We've treated them incredibly poorly and they deserve better. The movement in the UK used to be held in high regard. We are quickly turning into a Trump presidency. The secrets can't stay hidden for long. #coops #iyc2025

#iyc2025 Let's be honest. This international year has lacked joy. We are facing far too many challenges for it to have been a celebration. #coops

The UK movement feels much weaker than it did before C19. Yes, there were agendas prior to 2020, but the member blind leadership of today are making a good job of lining their own pockets, with wages they do not deserve.

2025 was meant to be another great celebration of the Int. Yr of #coops. Congress in Rochdale, the birthplace etc, should’ve been a moment of ambition and renewal. Instead, it’s felt like a missed opportunity. #IYC2025 #Coops

Next weekend, co-operators gather in Rochdale, the birthplace of our movement, for Congress. But there’ll be no hard talk. No serious debate. Just curated stories and applause. A movement that once empowered members now fears their questions. #Coops #IYC2025

Congress is coming up.
Another year. Another big theme. (Like they care).

Beneath the banners and speeches, real questions remain.

Who’s this really for?
Who’s benefiting?
And who’s being left behind?

The movement should be member-led, not managed for optics.

Worker co-ops have always been the spark. principled, practical, and worker powered. What starts with kindling grows into a fire, but only if we choose to gather round, not just watch from the sidelines. #WeMoveTheFire #Coops
Our 1st worker co-op weekend in 2014, we just had our 11th, 2nd as workers.coop. Movements like fires, if just embers need tending. But once they get going, they take on a life of their own, bring light and warmth to all around them, draw more to the fire. #coops #wemovethefire

Credit where it’s due. Members backed the motion on trade with Israel, showing the power of collective values in action. And yes, political donations matter too. Ordinary people backing a party rooted in co-op values is a counterweight to billionaire-funded politics. #CoopInsider #MemberPower #coops

Something’s not right at the heart of the UK co-op movement.

We’ve watched with growing concern as Co-operatives UK, an organisation we’ve supported and worked alongside for years, struggles with what can only be described as a leadership crisis.
