Things I do: Read, write, watch TV, watch movies, teach English at a community college, procrastinate.

If I'm on here, I should be grading or writing or both.

It's Teacher Appreciation Week! Now is the perfect time. (Whenever "now" is, it's always the perfect time.)
Heard from a former (undergrad) student who just defended her PhD. Students: tell your old profs about your successes and achievements. It's not bragging, and we love to hear about it. It's one of the best parts of being an educator.

What's the first cartoon that comes to mind when you think "Saturday Morning Cartoons"?

If you want me to be a semi-nice person, 10:30 or later is better
Yup. I can do 9 am if I have to, but if you really need me to do any problem solving-level cognitive work (most of my job at this point), you shouldn’t ask me before 10 am.

Re #17 - I meant homophone, she says rereading this months later 🤦🏾‍♀️
16. Student puts quotation marks around the title of a long work.

17. Spelling error (two sips if it's a homonym error)

18. You take a second look at something because it's not done well and the student usually does things well.

100% agree with Sean Baker. So many movies are going straight to streaming when they could (should!) be theatrical releases. I love going TO the movies and probably have actually seen fewer movies because I don't particularly care to watch movies at home. #Oscars

It can feel hard to have hope right now, but I'm a HS journalism teacher, and the work students around the world are doing gives me that hope. They are filling news deserts, fighting against censorship, and being watchdogs. Here's seven things you should know: www.poynter.org/educators-st...
Seven things to know about the student press - Poynter
Student journalists are tackling major issues and shaping local news, but they also face censorship, backlash and growing threats to press freedom

My faves are the people posting about actual racist things being done by superintendents, book banners, etc. all in the name of whiteness.

I'm catching up on #AbbottElementary, and that golf episode. I had to stop and pause to laugh at the Tiger Woods line. I believe I did what the internet calls "wheezing" at that bit.

My parents didn't know what I read. They just knew I read a lot. They never asked 🤷🏾‍♀️
When you were a teen, did your parents approve of the books you were reading?

I can't believe I caught up on my books posts. Now to catch up on Jeopardy!, I guess 😅 (about to start the TOC semifinals--so behind)

Re #33 - A fun game I played yesterday was having several Canvas tabs open (all with the same icon) and a tab with something else open (different icon) and kept opening Canvas tabs when I needed to open the something else tabs. WHY? WHY WOULD I DO THIS WHEN THE ICONS ARE DIFFERENT?
33. Try to accurately guess which tab you were just working in. One sip per incorrect guess.

34. Wish, once again, that you had a bigger screen so you could SEE all the many tabs/windows you have open for faster/easier copying and pasting.

35. Post link to the screen/set up you want.

I enjoyed doing this before, so Imma do it again. #28blackbooks (the last 28 I've enjoyed) written by Black authors for Black History Month. Obvs, I'm behind, which is great because I'm procrastinating anyway.

Tip from a colleague:

On first day, have students write "name as it appears on my roster" + "what you preferred to be called" on an index card. Take roll using index cards. That way, students are only called what they want to be called. #AcademicSky
I'll always ask my students at the start of every term what name they prefer to go by, how they'd like to be referred, saying they can always let me know in private. I refuse to not respect the dignity and power of human autonomy. I would be an unethical researcher if I did otherwise. #AcademicSky

Reminder: They're trying to demoralize you, and they're doing a great job of it. Part of resisting is making time for joy despite the attempts to make you feel this is not the time for it. Love your people. Dig the art that speaks to you. Go to the places where life flows into you. You deserve joy.

@karnythia.bsky.social is an amazing person to learn from and also agrees - this is NOT UNPRECEDENTED TIMES, this is us rewinding to a previous time in history that was - by the way- effectively countered through sustained resistance.

Civil rights were won through protests and lawsuits and literally fighting back. We are not in unprecedented times. We are in a horrible reboot of Reconstruction. Fight in every way possible. Flood those anti DEI tiplines with misinformation, spend 10 minutes every day telling your reps to stop this
