Settler Canadian in the UK; child of books; always enthusiastic, rarely prepared; curious, restless, and generally distracted. Overly excited by the 18th century, book history and print cultures, science fiction, Gothic, Nuclear Criticism, and yarn.
From my less irritable self - a new stack of books in a puddle of sunshine in time for IWD! Spent an evening listening to the authors talk about women's writing, responsibility, and embodied-ness at @leedslibraries.bsky.social #IWD #newfiction #springreading #tbrstack

I miss the strictness of libraries in days' gone - not for everything but definitely for food. It's an example of "reasonable" being too widely applied.

Came home to find this little beauty on our front lawn. 🌱

Escapist viewing after days spent reading about the Law is currently Battlestar Galactica (Ronald D. Moore remake). Simultaneously so flawed and so timely. This viewing (it's been a long time since we watched the series!): the Cylons are *too* human.

Fantastic long list (for adding to tottering TBR stack...) - so glad to see The Headland on here by the brilliant @abicurtiswriter.bsky.social: astonishing encounter with unresolvable otherness, love, art, and strange/familiar landscapes.

I am alwata irritated when media plays into the stratification of HEIs in the UK, particularly when the issue is academics and professional staff facing redundancy. This has been happening across the sector for years not just when it happens in "leading unis".
Quarter of leading UK universities cutting staff due to budget shortfalls
Up to 10,000 redundancies or job losses feared as institutes undergo restructuring

I seem to have replaced Sunday night blues (cos Monday = work day) with Sunday night existential crisis about every decision I've ever made and that's why Monday isn't a work day right now.

I'm trying to imagine a situation where, unprompted, I would clarify that I'm not a "raging" feminist. Or even prompted. 🤔

Just finished GRIS - I don't even have words yet for how brilliant this game is: I am wrung out and somehow refreshed at the same time. Just stunning. @nomada.studio

Back to mornings in the university library where I wrote my PhD. I love this building. 📚📝❤️ Still taking notes with pen and paper.

Starting again! For my observations on retraining in law @lexreturna.bsky.social - by "observations", I mean very random, disconnected things I find, or find neat, or find confusing.

Massive shout-out to any and all mature students. This takes more grit - & a better sense of humour - than I could have possibly imagined .

For the first time in 20 years, a border agent said "welcome home" when I got back to the UK. 2025 is already off to a good start.

Realising that "Christmas markets" are the same in most cities - rather than a charming local tradition - ranks as one of my biggest disappointments.
