would there be interest in a bsky film club where we take turns picking a film to watch and discuss? @economeager.bsky.social @sanpages.bsky.social @valeriaburdea.bsky.social @antoinevernet.com @dandekadt.bsky.social @blmckean.bsky.social

you say that like it’s a bad thing: Nina Hoss and Sandra Hüller in every film directed by Ade and Akin and Petzhold; Murnau, Lang, Fassbinder, von Trotta, Herzog, Wenders, et al. retrospectives every weekend, Die Toten Hosen blasting at every (real) football game, Kraftwerk at the clubs …
We will have to watch German movies and listen to German pop music. 😫
Neither America nor the rest of the world is prepared for how the dismantling of Pax Americana by Trump will eventually impact American soft power in culture and entertainment. A lot of things will change.

when @economeager.bsky.social tells me to read a post, i read it. when they tell me to watch a film, i watch it. when they tell me to watch a hockey show, i wait for the ensuing droll comments.
if i could make you read ONE (1) single post to improve your understanding of the challenges of social science in general it would be this one from @markfabian.bsky.social about wellbeing science specifically

Quick question for social science friends (esp. political science and economics): what would you say are "competitors" to game theory? I.e. what are theoretical frameworks that are different from game theory but trying to attack the same problems?

Note: they don't have to be good, just competitors.

i know @dandekadt.bsky.social has lots of important and helpful things to say on this topic. his resource page www.ddekadt.com/graduate-stu... (aimed at poli sci) is also good.

www.legacy.com/us/obituarie... John Kagel cultivated the experimental lab and culture at Pitt that we still enjoy. we all know his auction expts, but he also had a long-standing interest in animal behavior, e.g. Demand Curves for Animal Consumers, Commodity-Choice Behavior with Pigeons as Subjects

if only there was a field that studied optimal allocation of resources under constraints and uncertainty. did anyone maybe even get a fancy award for working that out? (if i recall correctly, this is not the first time it's happened to NEA sessions. ASSA, please sort it out.)
Every session and event sponsored by the National Economic Association was over capacity. The AEA must assign space appropriately in future meetings.
The AEA is not what it used to be

which other Bayesian econometrician is going to tell you about the appearance of “self help” in an earlier Beowulf translation?
I wrote about the endless temptation successful people feel to justify and feel justified in a clearly toxic system. Happy new year.
