As a proud Virginia alumna, this is a disgrace.
the president does not actually have the power to fire a university president or a museum director, but if elites simply roll over under pressure, then effectively he does

One of the happiest updates I’ve written since I started following this story. 12 students back in status and maybe more to come. Across the country, students are saying their SEVIS is back.

Also… when you start firing the ~volunteers~ surely you can drop the pretense that this is about efficiency. 🙄
NEW: i spoke with several young AmeriCorps volunteers around the country who were abruptly pulled off projects building homes, readying forests for wildfire season, and working at food banks Tuesday afternoon. they are now on their way home thanks to DOGE cuts —
DOGE Cuts Pull AmeriCorps Volunteers Off of Disaster Relief Jobs
The youth volunteers who were working on projects ranging from rebuilding homes destroyed in storms to distributing supplies for hurricane recovery were suddenly pulled from service. Why? DOGE cuts.

Gonna keep saying this: In the 1840s, Southerners insisted that they could kidnap any person they alleged was a slave without any state or federal process. This turned even minimal process into resistance and raised the salience of the issue, which radicalized a bunch of people against slavery.
Friendly reminder:

Due process is how we can be sure the people Miller and his henchmen are removing are legally subject to removal in the first place.

Exclusive: Trump's "pro-Hamas" purge could block foreign students from colleges
The planned purge is another escalation of Trump's aggressive crackdown on immigration and antisemitism that civil libertarians say stifles campus speech.

Will this make waves? Will this be addressed? Will the media, politicians, movement leaders seize on this?

Because during the Trump and Biden administrations, very little energy was focused on the *mechanics* of democracy. Which is how we got here. Nothing worked an no one tried to fix it.
Trump just signed an executive order banning vote by mail and ordering the defunding of any state that does not follow through with it as well as engage in massive voter roll purges.

There won't be free and fair elections ever again. If you're waiting for 2026, it's already too late.

The fascists don’t just want people to be afraid of dissenting. They also want you to feel hopeless and cynical, convinced change can’t happen.

They want you to just take care of your own life because the greater world is too much.

They want you to feel this precisely because things *can* change.

Accusations of antisemitism are going to be the tip of the spear for much of the fascist takeover of the United States.

Those who care about antisemitism must vociferously push back. They want us to be complicit so they have a justification for their actions as well as have a group to blame it on.

Colorado last year *required* jails to set up voting stations so people behind bars could vote — a first for any state ever.

And how'd it go? Fantastic.

In 2022, 231 people in CO jails voted. But in 2024, 2,300+ in CO jails voted.

That's a nearly tenfold jump.
