Todd Davenport and I were on Cochrane's author team for a full update of their #MECFS exercise review. We wrote this open letter to them, critical of their decision to disband the effort, called for withdrawal of current review

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research.

I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.
NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

Just received notice that my NIH study section next week has been cancelled. It has nothing to do with DEI and will have a negative impact on critical cancer research.

The thing that’s most striking about this is that they set up an e-mail account specifically for people to report on each other for any attempt to implement “DEIA or similar ideologies” and threatened “adverse consequences” for NOT reporting.

Scientific advancements aside, this is economically irresponsible

Every $1 spent by NIH generates $2.46

For example, in 2023, $47B in NIH spending generated ~$93B

Halting NIH spending will LOSE the US a lot of money (and talent)

I like the quiet on here from no outrage algorithm but it’s hard to tell whether some of the stuff I post gets seen because there’s never much engagement. Maybe that will change over time because I’m still new. For now, it’s hard to know if I’m just posting these long threads into the void. Oh well.

I think a big difference that reduces engagement is that ‘likes’ have no effect here, and people tend to like rather than repost. But the only way more people will see a post, is if their followers repost it 😕

Everyone is so mad at Biden protecting people from the inevitable upcoming partisan witch hunts as the last thing he did that it apparently makes them totally cool with Trump pardoning the worst people you can think of as the first thing he does.
