Historically, many tactics have been used to produced controlled opposition, both on the micro scale and on the macro. The most notorious of these is certainly the Nazi brownshirts, who controlled their political opponents by cowing them with terroristic violence.

Controlled Opposition (noun phrase):
An individual/group which poses as the political opposition to a dominant political group, but which is quietly controlled by that group. By acting as purely symbolic opposition to the dominant group, controlled opposition ensures the success of that group.

You also can’t pick them up and put them bodily in the time-out chair, which is frankly very annoying

In a healthy democracy, these party leaders would have been out on their asses 20+ years ago instead of just forcing us to watch as they physically rot into decrepitude

Wow, you worked together to gut ACA subsidies and allow the president to take obligated money and funnel it elsewhere.

I have an elderly family member who needs long-term care covered under insurance. Republicans denied the care without explanation. Hassan opened up the case again for us. After her yes vote tonight, the same long-term care is at risk of being denied permanently.
Disgraceful.

Yeah I’m angry and grumpy tonight, and seeing a lot of hopium about “at least the Epstein files…”.
Here’s my opinion on that. Everything that could harm Trump and allies will have been scrubbed. Otherwise, there is no way the government shutdown would be ending.

This single loss doomed immigrants for over a decade and counting
Not that the Gang of 8 bill was great. But it was the last gasp of a real chance at bipartisan compromise. Gone.

When Senate Republicans vote against healthcare subsidies in December that they “promised” a vote on Chuck Schumer is going to write the most strongly worded letter OF ALL TIME!

For what it's worth, I do basically agree that even pretty good Dem Senators (e.g. Booker) should face a strong primary challenge
Some of them may end up deserving to win those primaries! But they should still have to face them

In a normal democracy, a total collapse of party leadership would result in an no-confidence vote and immediate snap elections to find leaders who can lead

We need an entirely new senate yet we’re stuck with these losers.
I assure you if anyone in the Democratic Senate caucus actually believed this was a good bill they would be physically restraining one of the "defectors" from voting, which would not be particularly difficult anyway
They all support it!

Senator Schumer has failed to lead this party in one of its most critical moments, and Americans will pay the price. It’s time for him to step down from leadership and make way for a new generation willing to fight for the people instead of the powerful.

The coordinated nature of this—none are facing voters in 2026—means that either Schumer approved it or failed in his job as Senate Majority Leader to stop it.
Dems voting "no" get zero credit until they demand a change in leadership. Schumer out as Leader, Durbin out as Whip.
