Steve isn’t here anymore, but he always posted this picture on Hanukkah so I thought we could carry on his tradition and remember him.
Happy Hanukkah to our friends who celebrate. Rachel Posner, a rabbi’s wife in Kiel, Germany, took this photograph in 1931 -- a potent reminder that fascism must be fought in every generation, even if it's wrapped in an American flag and a red hat.

The thing about JD Vance calling those racist Young Republicans “kids who made mistakes” isn’t just that some of them are in their mid thirties or that they weren’t mistakes, but that his president once publicly called for the death penalty for five Black innocent kids between the ages of 14-16.

The thing about the debate of whether the Bible does or doesn’t condone slavery is that it kinda doesn’t matter.

Ultimately, if you need an invisible deity to tell you that the buying, selling, or ownership of other humans is wrong, you have much bigger fish to fry than the errancy of the Bible.

Okay. Let’s get this out of the way.

1. Black people do not owe white people for the civil war.

Why? Because white people created the slave trade that led to it.

It was fought over who got to own us, not who got to humanize us. Otherwise, we would’ve been given rights immediately after the war.

The reason white men are so big on “open debate” about non-debatable things is because whiteness makes them believe every space belongs to them.

When privilege insulates you from danger so much to the point that inconvenience can be mistaken for oppression, all that’s left is entitlement.

The reason so many of us feel like we’re losing our minds right now is because we’re constantly being lied to and expected to absorb it all as if it were the truth, only to be treated like opposition because we won’t pretend a lie is the truth.

This is fascism in real time.

Lynchings were spectator sports in America. White families would picnic & bring their kids, because even our murders were seen as performances.

And now here we are, asked to perform again. Asked to pretend we didn’t see what we saw.

When it’s us, “move on.”

When you’re white, “never forget.”

It's getting tiresome to hear anti-Trumpers on the left and on the right reflexively presume that team Trump is just going to ignore the courts and the courts can't do anything about it. Expressing that attitude is contributing to normalization of anti-democratic behavior.
