it's here!! hold my hand as we speedrun through the roman republic's best, worst, most toxic relationship triangle. it's even a toxic relationship pentagon if you squint.
the courtesan and the muse, or: persuasive oratory, incest allegations, and lady ox-eyes
a speedrun through my favorite toxic, disastrous relationship trio

i really expected to put out more translation work this month but it’s not happening… other things are getting in the way and i’m also feeling pretty stuck creatively. i think i’m burned out

i love women writing biographies of historical women… especially when so much of the surviving historical record comes from men, and women have been filtered through that lens from the start. sometimes i see a modern biography and it’s like, Oh, great, just what we need. another male gaze

one of the most mortifying things in the world is meeting a new colleague somewhere and then connecting on linkedin afterwards. it’s bad whether you send or accept the connection request. like okay fine we remembered each other’s names and now we’re “friends” on the doomscrolling job website

museums are cool because the people who work there are like look at this neat thing and you're like wow that is neat and you just do it over and over again until it is time to go

A beautiful early medieval cobalt blue glass beaker. dating late 7th century AD. Found in a burial in Lauchheim.

This type of vessel has no foot and will not stand upright, it had to be emptied before it could be put down.

some fun little details from the GW letters i read last week :')

1. he spelled seize wrong: "sieze." confusion over IE spelling rules leave no man untouched
2. he forgot a word and squeezed it in above with a little ^
3. apparently writing fast, the dot for "i" in "fine" slid over to "e" instead

having an eating disorder is so fun because i’ll get a diet coke from the costco food court and then have a small breakdown in the car about being a horrible person

historical mentor/protege relationships are catnip to me unfortunately. especially when the private correspondence reveals an intensity of emotion & affection that would not necessarily be displayed publicly
