Because of the dry conditions fungi are still in short supply at Haw Park but I spotted Polyporus tuberaster today. This is a new species for the Wintersett list. Pores are visible on the insert. @stevied131.bsky.social

The are quite a few small inkcap species and a bit of microscopy was needed to identify this clustering species, seen at Wintersett, as Tulosesus hiascens (formerly Coprinellus hiascens). @stevied131.bsky.social #FungiFriday

Helvella acetabulum (Vinegar Cup) appears in spring at Wintersett, growing beneath hawthorns on the edge of a track. The fungus gets its name because it is shaped like a cup used by the Romans for holding vinegar. @stevied131.bsky.social

An unlikely pair of swans on the Low Lake. #Wintersett this morning. The Whooper Swan has been present all winter & though it can fly it may not be fully fit for a trip back to Iceland, we’ll see.

We are still managing to get at least one of these annually despite the massive decline in birds coming to the UK, but we have not had a Glaucous Gull since 2018.

Young uns never had it so good. Read how we birded in the 70s & 80s, be amazed how long it took to see that photo you just took like this 1990 Leachs Petrel!

Due to exceptional ongoing demand we have arranged an additional print run in order to ensure everyone who wants one can obtain a copy.

Even better, economies of scale allow us to offer these at just £25 per copy plus p&p.

Coming soon - Very few sites can pull on 200 years of almost continuous recording. The earliest fully dated record we have is from 04 July 1822 by Charles Waterton. ‘About half past one in the afternoon in the park at Walton Hall i heard the Cuckoo call repeatedly’.
