An unlikely pair of swans on the Low Lake. #Wintersett this morning. The Whooper Swan has been present all winter & though it can fly it may not be fully fit for a trip back to Iceland, we’ll see.

We are still managing to get at least one of these annually despite the massive decline in birds coming to the UK, but we have not had a Glaucous Gull since 2018.

The diaries of Norman Moore from his visits to Walton Hall in the 1860s are exquisite and have provided a wealth of information on the birdlife and other wildlife in the Park.

Here’s my first bins when I started birding around 1976. They were bought by my dad around 1967, Ross 9x35 & pretty decent quality. Read how we got on in the 70s in #Birdsofwintersett

Young uns never had it so good. Read how we birded in the 70s & 80s, be amazed how long it took to see that photo you just took like this 1990 Leachs Petrel!

Coming soon - Very few sites can pull on 200 years of almost continuous recording. The earliest fully dated record we have is from 04 July 1822 by Charles Waterton. ‘About half past one in the afternoon in the park at Walton Hall i heard the Cuckoo call repeatedly’.
