One major problem, bluntly, is that lots of folks can't distinguish between good writing and poor writing. This is about education, not intelligence: they could learn the difference, but it's frequently not taught, even in "good" schools. This is ultimately a competitive disadvantage for them.
it's so wild that people conflate quickness with quality so they think chatGPT writing a wall of text in 10 seconds means it's good writing.

NSF is about to dismantle NCAR at Russell Vought's direction to protect the fossil fuel industry. It's hard to communicate just how much NCAR does, so let's take a look: I've never worked at NCAR, and I've worked with NCAR researchers once ever. What scientific discoveries has NCAR made possible? 👇

“He is not unstoppable and you are not without power”

Remind yourself of this every day.

Especially on the bad days.
Buttigieg on Indiana: "The big part of how Trumpism works is to make you feel totally disempowered. To make him feel inevitable. And yet the clear takeaway from this is he is not unstoppable and you are not without power."

They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.
Torture Techniques from CIA Black Sites Were Used at Alligator Alcatraz
Amnesty International, interviewing migrant detainees, identifies use of the confinement box. There can be no denying it is a torture prison

Great breakdown of the situation at UNL (which is a breakdown of a different sort). They are eliminating multiple programs, including statistics. Absurd
I wrote out the whole exhausting narrative of what's happened at UNL over the past 2.5 months, including the videos, the memes, and a fair bit of snark. srvanderplas.github.io/posts/other/...

This post really made me think about the fact that I have never even heard of a university just up and eliminating a department. This type of cut feels like it should have marriage proposal rules, i.e. if it is surprising to anyone involved, something has gone terribly wrong.

So frustrated by BOR's decision to eliminate four departments at UNL today, I needed to vent visually. As a metrics researcher, I decided to chart UNL's ranking over time—and wow, the school actually had good old days, but the decline over the past decade is utterly astonishing.

Thank you for the detailed update about all of your collective efforts to convince the administration of the error of their ways. It is particularly ironic and tragic that their own lack of statistical and data handling expertise will likely lead to the elimination of your statistics department.
