@barttorvik.bsky.social I've been using your rankings in my basketball predictor for some time, pulling them from the Time Machine. This year I'm getting stopped by the "Verifying browser" check. Is there an approved way around that? Or some better way to get all the team rankings on a given day?

If countries really want to retaliate against Elon Musk, they should revoke Starlink's licenses to operate ground terminals. Without a worldwide network of ground terminals, Starlink would be crippled. #Starlink #Musk

A sad day for woodworking, as Nancy Hiller has died. She was a rare talent and teacher. Rest in peace.

One reason I haven't had time to work on maps -- but at least it involves lettering!

Listen up browsers! You need to have "Factory Mode Window" for a window that works exactly like a fresh browser install. Default settings, empty caches, no extensions. This is much needed to help users figure out what's wrong when a website doesn't work.

I'm going to start working on label placement soon, but in the meantime I spent some time generating maps and cleaning up the little (or big) errors I encountered.

Today's blog posting is a retrospective on the map compass series, focusing on the philosophy of procedural generation I used and on the price & benefits of "open sources" code sharing. I rate it a successful experiment that clarified my thinking in several areas.

The latest posting on the blog talks about adding the procedural compass generator I just finished into Dragons Abound. The big work is refactoring to use the Dragons Abound-specific drawing functions that create a "hand-drawn" look.

The last chapter of compass generation (*) is up on the blog for your enjoyment, and the code on Github for your use. #procgen #fantasymaps

(*) Except for a post-mortem next time, and adding the generator to Dragons Abound.
(**) And who knows, maybe more in the future? :-)

The next part of compass generation is up on the blog; this implements some tricky language features to enable one part of the compass generation to control a later part. #proceduralgeneration #fantasy #maps

Spent a few diverting moments today playing with , @doersino's minimalist generative art toy. It has "unlabeled" controls, that encourage you to explore without expectation. Very seamless design and excellent user experience.

Now that I'm back from watching NCAA basketball and a short vacation in St. Lucia, it's time to get back to map compasses!

I took a break from watching basketball to put up the next blog post on procedural generation of map compasses. This time I add scales, and the compasses are starting to get more interesting and useful! You can jump to and try a few.

I'm taking a break from Map Compass generation for a week or so to watch college basketball games. Predicting college basketball was my previous (*) obsession, which you can explore below in the meantime.

(*) And to a certain extent current, though I no longer update the blog.

At long last, all the pieces are in place and we're now generating (simple) map compasses. Try it yourself at , and visit the GitHub page to download the code and start inventing your own map compass rules. #procgen #fantasymaps
November 22, 2024 at 2:05 AM
In my latest posting, I finish the Lodestone generative rules engine. You can grab the code from Github, but next time I'll add a feature to read rules from a file which will make it more user-friendly -- and then we're off to the races generating compasses! #procgen #tools
