Deeply proud to be backed by Alan Johnson, a giant of the Labour movement.

The deputy leadership is a choice between a strong government true to our values and ready to win again, or the divided party for which Farage is desperate.

Alan Johnson backs Bridget Phillipson for next Labour deputy
The former home secretary said that the No 10 favourite was one of the party’s ‘star performers’ and her rival Lucy Powell would ‘destabilise’ the leadership

Elon Musk just called Social Security a Ponzi scheme, so it’s worth reiterating: All functional retirement schemes, public or private, pre funded or pay as you go, are claims on future production - there's just no way, at scale, of storing current production for use during retirement

UK 10 year bond yields have risen 14 basis points in the last month. Germany's have risen by 30 bp and the USA's by 21 bp, confirming both the fickleness of markets and the media. #soundmoney

In @jonathanweisman.bsky.social's magnum opus about Dems and the working class, it's at the end that you get the full truth about 2024: Biden-Harris ran the most pro-worker administration in decades, but voters blamed them for inflation anyway.

Simple story: causes of diminished support for left parties and rise of populists/far right are affecting many countries, but US two-party system (because of our electoral rules) and counter-majoritarian institutions that boost the right make the consequences more dramatic here - at least for now
Not mutually exclusive. I would also caution against putting too much weight on US-specific explanations - this pattern has been seen across the developed world in response to education polarization, changes in the economy, etc.
The question in my mind isn’t “how did Democrats lose the working class” but “Why have Republicans evaded all responsibility for their role in producing the status quo?” and the answer is tied up in questions of culture and status.

For the sixth time since becoming Mayor in 2016, I’m freezing bus fares in London.

More people use the bus in our city than any other form of public transport. Freezing these fares will help Londoners on lower incomes struggling with the cost of living.

Is this the least scandalous government ever?

Big political ‘stories’ from the last month:

• A 10-year-old blunder by the transport secretary
• A petition for a general election
• Kemi Badenoch’s lunch order

Shame competence doesn’t write headlines.
