A lot of people forget how in 2004 the Bush regime kidnapped the democratically elected President of Haiti, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, and dumped him in Africa.
Is there any modern precedent for abducting a head of state?

Plenty of examples of coups, assassinations and domestic trials, including show trials, but this is like a Crusader Kings plot.

tonight's watch: my 2nd angelopoulos film: reconstruction (1970)

a much simpler and tighter story than the sprawling epic that was the travelling players, here we follow the interrogation of two murderers, as well as their doomed efforts to establish alibis for themselves in the wake of the crime

listening to the bloodwork episode about carl schmitt feels very appropriate given what's happened today

Regarding the "illegality" of today's US attack on Venezuela:

Those laws aren't real and won't help you.

Indicticting him a third time won't be any more effective than the last two.

It probably isn't illegal anyway.

These avenues of "resistance" were designed by the state to defang you.

tonight's watch, the final film of 2025,

douglas fairbanks' epic, the thief of baghdad (1924)

it's fair to say, a lot of this film has aged, very badly, the orientalism/general racism is off the charts, and there's some homophobia thrown in for extra spice

tonight's watch:

red desert (1964) by michelangalo antonioni

released the same year as the film i watched yesterday, but a very different film,

an exploration of alienation and distancing from a sick and dying world,
December 30, 2025 at 10:50 PM
this is the first french film i've seen, so let's add the country to my map...

just kidding
tonight's watch, a real dud, fantômas (1964)

i've already watched fantômas (1913), so was hoping for a film that built on the legacy of that... kind of groundbreaking film

my guy, you cannot be this naked about your religious sympathies

it's the fucking 1930s you're writing this,

there are catholics more tolerant towards protestantism that you can find in the sixteenth-century

December 28, 2025 at 10:28 PM
tonight's watch: ossos (1997)

hard to really put this film to words,

an exploration of poverty in the slums of fontainhas lisboa that deftly avoids the follies of making its subjects the source of pity,

having a sparkling little back and forth edit war with this rando ip user

tonight's watch:

abel gance's remake of his 1919 film, j'accuse (1938)

not in fact a film about the dreyfus affair as one might imagine, this is instead a really quite messy but at times beautifully idealistic anti-war film
December 20, 2025 at 11:54 PM
