this represents another country knocked off my 'world of cinema' project

we're starting to get some fill out in west africa, let's gooo (darker colour to indicate the one just input)

tonight's watch: the acclaimed mauritanian film 'waiting for happiness' by abderrahmane sissako

almost entirely devoid of a plot, we are left to consider themes of identity, community, tradition and emigration, in addition to having much to think about, the film is also pretty and well shot

back baking today, and i produced a nice batch of 16 carta di musica flatbreads :)

these always taste great

tonight's watch: glass onion

some strong character work, some good emotional payout, but ultimately its walking the same path knives out did, and the 'mystery' such as it is, is not compelling

very interesting use of covid though, rarely see a film where it plays such an important role

you know, when your edit adds 1000 characters to an article, an edit description of 'fixed spelling mistake' is not overly believable

as a single user, he's not going to break through the rfc consensus here, particularly in an article with this many active arbitration remedies on it

the way the last attempt to do what jimmy wants (the march rfc) was shut down was pretty definitive

tonight's watch: the love of jeanne ney (1927)

damn, first genuine dud i've watched in a while, a real shame cos the direction is great but the story its attached to is so fucking bad lmao

the trouble with the films i watch is, they're all too good

i kind of forget what the average film is like
and my rating distribution ends up looking like this
October 30, 2025 at 7:20 PM
oh, nevermind, you can gfilter that stuff out

ignore me!
October 28, 2025 at 9:18 PM
last night's watch (i wanted to review it last night, but it was almost 04:00 by the time the movie finished, i was very sleepy

les vampires (1915)

i hated this film, for the last 3 of its 8 hours i was begging for it to be over
yet, i will rate it 9/10
October 26, 2025 at 11:52 AM

October 23, 2025 at 5:45 PM

October 21, 2025 at 7:56 PM
hahahah

letterboxd has these 'nanogenres'

and of the films i've watched since i returned to cinema this year,

four of my top six genres are 'emotion, storytelling, despair' 'powerful, sadness, despair' 'drama, profound, bleak' and 'touching, profound, suffering'
October 18, 2025 at 11:07 PM
tonight's watch: beanpole (2019)

what a fucking movie, jesus christ what cinema

watching this made me so uncomfortable, it was so unpleasant, but it was also so beautiful
October 18, 2025 at 10:03 PM
a more serious problem is, my computer cannot run ultrakill

i had to reduce the graphics to looking like this to get something close to smooth

i'll never be a professional typist at this rate 😭
October 15, 2025 at 6:40 AM
tonight's watch: a short film about killing (1988)

a moving denunciation of the death penalty, but it does not take the easy way out

jacek is a murderer, and a brutal one at that,
yet the director kieslowski (and piotr, his defence lawyer) still see great injustice in his murder in turn,

sub 300 flagless, new time record for me, let's goooo
October 5, 2025 at 12:57 PM
this was the situation
i'm rubbish at calculating odds on the fly
i ended up making a guess that didn't blow me, but also made no progress

so i moved on to a new corner rather than take my chances again
October 5, 2025 at 12:38 PM
flagless solve, though for some reason after you finish it displays the flags :(

had a nasty guessing spot fairly early on in the top left i spent several minutes trying to figure out which guess gave me the best probability
October 5, 2025 at 12:34 PM
instead of wasting your time debating made up "slurs", consider playing flagless minesweeper

i had this one in the bag, i had just forgotten to clear one tile that didn't have a mine under it (circled), so when i was using counting to break the bottom left i thought i had two mines in play not 3

tonight's watch: taste of cherry (1997)

fascinating film, the film making is for the most part very restrained, particularly in the first half i could describe the shots as boring, yet this is a deliberate choice, to provide space for the three dialogues of the film
soldier, cleric, labourer,
