when Elon Musk started recruiting for DOGE last November, he said the work would be “tedious” and “compensation is zero"

now it turns out some DOGE operatives are earning six-figure salaries, one as high as $195,200, as much as a civil servant can legally make

Some DOGE Staffers Are Drawing Six-Figure Government Salaries
Engineers and executives at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency are drawing healthy taxpayer-funded salaries—sometimes from the very agencies they are cutting.

obviously i am not glad that social media sites are pivoting to right wing bullshit, and tons of people are going to lose their audiences/networks -- i experienced this when we all left x the everything app. but god damn would i love it if this brought back Web Sites

President Biden has issued an executive order blocking drilling for oil in more than 625 million acres of U.S. ocean. It's the largest such move in history, but is almost guaranteed to be challenged under the incoming Trump administration.

Looking back at the last 4 years it's kind of wild to think about how much Biden actually got done.

Between appointing judges, the infrastructure bill, inflation reduction, & chips he's accomplished a ton despite a hostile court and Congress.

I think opinion of him is going to climb over time.

there is a 24/7 right-wing propaganda apparatus that operates across multiple mediums and it designed to do exactly this: smother any kind of local, material concern with cultural war signifiers and cultivate a “political affiliation as team sport” ethos
Montana is the clearest place to see the nationalization of US politics. Whole Dem ticket was multigenerational MT hunters & farmers in bolo ties. Dem gov candidate owned a gun manufacturer. GOP slate was outta state tech.

Whole race was dominated by natl culture war & southern border, GOP sweep

It's funny, as a creative professional, it used to be when I got notes and made changes to what I worked on, I'd look at it and begrudgingly agree that it's an improvement.

But I've reached a turning point where now it usually feels like a lateral move, and very rarely a slide backwards

Anytime I see any story especially on tiktok that makes me feel a strong emotion good or bad, I immediately Google it and see if there's a trusted news source corroborating it.

There was a story about an HBCU building being burned down post election that had a lot of distorted facts too...
The way dem tiktok latched onto the story of Fuentes’ house being burned down was kinda unsettling. People smugly laughing about something that never happened

I've seen this a few times and while people may feel this way it's not true.

Kamala's campaign offered solutions at the cost of the wealthy.
The problem is in this country a lot of people only have empathy for 3 groups: the rich, white men whose jobs can also be costumes, and dead blonde women.
It takes an exile from Putin’s Russia, writing about the theories of an exile from Orban’s Hungary, to cut through the noise about Trump’s America, from which we have nowhere left to run. Gift link to M. Gessen in NYT: www.nytimes.com/2024/11/15/o...

Check it out and if you have any more suggestions or if I left you out, let me know.

One of the striking things about Trump related announcements is I'm not surprised or shaken by any of it. 8 years ago it felt like every decision was a new low and a danger to democracy.

Today, it all feels obvious. "Well yeah he's gonna need to appoint someone like that to overthrow the govt."

Elon, using Trump’s casual racism as a certificate of authenticity, warns Senators against confirming Biden nominated judges during the lame duck.
Do not sleep on the Elon thuggery.

I quit Twitter back when Elon first announced he wanted to buy it. What I miss is largely the endless scroll, but specifically by people I don't know.

Threads is too tied to my personal life.

Mastodon felt like only techy weirdos. Hope this strikes the right balance...

You can't underestimate the power of dickishness in winning over voters.

It makes you seem tough, and like you're smarter than whoever you're being a dick to.

People think you're more honest because well why else would you say something so dickish if it wasn't true?

Tons of discourse about new media and building a left pipeline to mirror the one on the right.

Thing is 90% of the pipeline is not directly political. It's about gaming or anime or whatever, then it starts to slowly turn up, dating, wealth etc.
So basically you need to start a One Piece podcast.
