Subjective assessments of culture or 'fit' often have an enormous class bias.

New paper showing how personal interviews often allow employers to discriminate against minorities.

🚨Next time you hire, don’t take it easy! In a new working paper, @elliottash.bsky.social, Jason Sockin, and I show the difficulty of the interview signals to workers whether the job is a good fit. 🚨

Job interviews are not just a mechanism for employers to evaluate applicants.

Research by @elliottash.bsky.social et al finds candidates use them to screen firms, rejecting offers if the interview was too easy:

Thrilled that our “Interviews” paper was accepted to UChicago’s AI in Social Science Conference on Sep 25-26 🎉

We show that interview difficulty signals match quality, including future colleagues. Easy interviews lead to more rejections and faster turnover!

Yesterday at NBER SI Jason Sockin presented our work with Elliott Ash and me showing how your interview process shapes how job seekers form perceptions of you as an employer. These impressions can impact everything from offer acceptance to employee retention!

Honored to have my research highlighted by the great Steven Pinker! When I started this work, I had no idea where it would lead. This is such a cool moment—I’ll cherish it for a very very long time.
