Transportation, a special kind of land-use 🚌
PhD(c) in Transport Geography at McMaster University.
Connecting: inequalities, climate change, transport, spatial analysis
A preprint ☀️ forming the foundation of my PhD dissertation. It traces how accessibility, the “potential” to spatially interact, relates to spatial interaction modelling. It also outlines how constants from this oh-so-related field can be folded into accessibility to yield interpretable units!

Friends, one of the biggest issues during this election has been Housing. Disabled Ontarians are among those most impacted by Ontario's failure to build accessible housing, ensure full rent control, and we are under direct attack through policing of unhoused disabled folks.

Imagine if Olivia Chow or a Liberal/NDP premier said this. There would be so much outrage, accusations of communist dictatorships, etc etc.

But we operate in a landscape where it's just "harmless" goofy bumbling Doug Ford.

In Canada, we don't have formalized regional land-use and transportation planning structures. It is more ad-hoc, unlike the MOP structure in the US.

Came across a recent working paper that details some transferable lessons from their system to Canada. A School of Cities (UofT) paper. Interesting!

Im/mobilities, land and climate change are inescapably linked. Disasters impact those with the least, disproportionality. We need to stop burning fossil fuels and must build (back, anew and retrofit) sustainably.
Inmates are fighting California wildfires in long-running and controversial practice
California has turned to incarcerated firefighters since 1915. To those opposed to the use of inmates as firefighters, the system is seen as exploitative.

🤔 Fossil-fuel driven climate change is making insuring certain 'property markets' unprofitable. Insurers known this. But de-risking and reg. caps can extend coverage to riskier properties at a cost to everyone's premiums (insurers operate globally and profit-seek)... Is this status-quo worth saving?
