The second wave never escaped the idea of something "natural" underlying the "distortions" of patriarchy which led smoothly into the worst abuses of cultural feminism and smuggled all kinds of gender essentialism into supposedly anti-essentialist work.

For cis feminism, explaining the psychological mechanisms by which cis women are forced to accept their place in patriarchy was a route to helping women liberate themselves from those mechanisms. Explaining queer people within those same mechanisms was explaining us away. Telling us we're not real.

The problem transness brings to feminism is that we are a pretty stark example of coercive social processes failing because they hit something irreducible. Our needs as trans people are directly opposed to patriarchy's ends for us and so we present as a fault line.

I don't think that's necessarily a contradiction. In theory, ego-death would lead to understanding that all are deserving of dignity and all have worth, including the self.
So if you had low self-worth, deflating the ego would necessarily raise your consciousness of your own self-worth!
